University will provide generous bursaries PLYMOUTH

WANT to study MSc Sustainable Construction? Bursaries are available to Cornwall-based applicants. PLYMOUTH University is celebrating after securing agreement with the European Social Fund (ESF) to provide generous financial bursaries for Cornwall-based applicants to their distance-learning Masters degrees in sustainable construction. Anyone

working or resident in Cornwall can apply for the support, which pays the bulk of the tuition fees for the first two years of the three-year programmes. Steve Donohoe, Plymouth’s MSc lead, commented: ‘We launched our distance-learning Masters degrees last October following extensive market research, so we are thrilled to receive this ESF backing.’ The university is recognised as one

of the UK’s leading providers of sustainable construction education. ‘We really understand sustainable construction,’ said Mr Donohoe, ‘virtually all our staff are research- active in the field, so our students really benefit.’ There are two Masters degrees available, which combine sustainability with a globally- recognised RICS qualification in either project management or cost management. The two MScs are delivered as four taught modules, each 18 weeks in length over two years, followed by a year-long research module. The first module, Sustainability and the Built Environment, combines personal, professional and sustainable development, delivering a deep understanding of the sustainability agenda and how construction professionals can contribute, both personally and professionally. The first

module underpins all the modules that follow, which deal with sustainable technologies and innovations, sustainable project management, sustainable cost management and, finally, value and risk. Although the degrees are delivered using distance learning, all the modules commence with start-up weekends on campus in either October or February. In addition, to promote flexibility, each module can be taken individually as CPD if required. Visit www.plymouth.ac.uk/ sustainableconstruction.
