Southern Alberta Company recognized for innovation in the oilfi eld

TCB Welding in Brooks has been recognized for the development of the Silver Jack design by Alberta Innovates Technology Futures.

Silver Jack artifi cial lift technology may likely mean that fewer massive pump jacks will dot the landscape in the future and it was developed in southern Alberta by a team of industrial fabricators determined to answer the cries of producers.

Picture a traditional pump jack and the way it blocks not only the sun but also the view of the prairies as you drive down a well traveled gravel road. Silver Jacks — when compared to a traditional lift — are a fraction of the size and much easier to ignore.

TCB Welding staff took the 20,000-pound elephant out of the equation and now that same well head becomes smaller – weighing in at about 300 pounds,” says TCB general manager Bill Sewall. “It is a pretty robust and portable system. There is even talk about it going down to South America.”

Although ZEDI Inc. purchased Silver Jack technology in 2011 and continues to improve upon its original design, TCB Welding continues to manufacture the unique artifi cial lift in Southern Alberta.

“The design has eliminated possible leak points and uses bio-hydraulic fl uid, while making it almost invisible compared to a conventional pump jack,” says Alberta Innovates Technology Futures VP Rick Tofani. “This is the kind of leading

edge innovation being developed by entrepreneurial, forward thinking Alberta companies.”

Leading the pack with innovation since 2001, Sewall and bother Jody, on behalf of TCB Welding, were proud to accept an 'Innovation' award this past May at the Southern Alberta Petroleum Show held in Medicine Hat.

“I was very surprised to get the award, “ says Sewall. “It took us two and a half years from start to fi nish and the award gives the company a lot of credibility it deserves — a southern Alberta company that wouldn’t otherwise have been noticed.”
