“Over the last six or seven years, in the Alberta oilsands, there has been a real push for modularity,” says Daza. “Installation costs, in the fi eld, are very expensive and limited. Industry asked us to minimize the amount of fi eld installation work and at the same time provide a robust, reliable system to treat produced water.”

fi eld – amounting to fewer labour costs and a much shorter schedule. An Aquatech analysis indicates fi eld installation costs are reduced by as much as 75 per cent and the overall fi eld installation and commissioning schedule to be reduced by about 60 per cent. Daza says these are important features of the SmartMOD™ system.


“Traditionally if you delivered the equipment to the fi eld there is a substantial amount of labour involved in assembling the system, including fi eld welding, civil work, etc,” Daza says. “We’ve pushed to create a design that puts as much of the traditional fi eld installation now into assembly/fab shops and maximize the module design yet still transportable to the site.”

A traditional evaporator tower stands about 150 feet tall and requires extensive concrete foundations but SmartMOD™ delivers the capabilities within four much shorter sections that can be set in place quicker with far less civil work.


“We brought the overall height of a tower down to half of its conventional height and there are inherent benefi ts to the design,” says Daza. “You don’t have to recirculate the brine up to 150 feet, concrete foundations don’t have to be built up as much because the centre of gravity is much lower, and the system design provides superior distillate quality.”
