Reclamation research moves forward

Research is continuing on a large-scale project to advance the understanding of reclamation practices at Alberta oilsands.

This winter, snow surveys and atmospheric depositions will occur on Suncor’s fi rst reclaimed tailings ponds and a CNRL site. Called FORWARD III, the project is a partnership of Tervita, Suncor, CNRL and four universities. The primary goal is to provide soil and watershed assessment tools to support oilsands reclamation eff orts. The research is led by Dr. Preston McEachern, Tervita’s director of research and development.

“We are currently half way into the fi rst fi eld season,” he said. Researchers are working to develop and improve state- of-the-art modeling programs capable of predicting long-term water quality and quantity recovery rates as vegetation is established and grows on a reclaimed site.
