The project will be built in three phases. In Phase A, one full well pad will demonstrate the SAP process, out of four well pads in total.

“We will start with 25 per cent of well production and gradually increase,” says Sadler.

“It costs more for the project initially because of the additional equipment needed. For example, we recycle the butane. But those costs are more than off set by the improvement of well production.”

SAP can improve both business performance and environmental performance, he adds.

Production is scheduled to start by 2017 at the latest, with the possibility of starting as soon as 2016, depending on demand for labour and materials.

Depending on what type of work is happening, construction at Narrows Lake will require between 1,000 and 2,000 workers.

Once complete, Phase A is expected to produce 45,000 barrels per day (bpd).

“Rather than building giant mega projects, we are building our oilsands projects in smaller, manageable stages,” Sadler says.

Phase B will basically be a carbon copy of the earlier phase, expected to produce another 45,000 bpd. Phase C will debottleneck the project and is expected to produce 40,000 bpd for a total of 130,000 barrels.

vice president, Narrows Lake

Cenovus is balancing using new technology with being careful not to “re-invent the wheel,” he adds.

“Our entire water treatment area at the Narrows Lake plant will be extremely similar to Christina Lake.”

Narrows Lake is expected to have a lifespan of 40 years.
