A Closer Look at Sam’s Pedigree By Judy Wardrope

he individual and team gold-medal-winning horse in eventing may belong to the Baden-Württemberg registry, but his pedigree shows that to be a bit misleading. Sam, who has also been known as Sam FBW and La Biostethique Sam FBW, is a 16.2-hand gelding born in Germany in 2000. Stan the Man (1982) – He is a Thoroughbred that was born

T

in Ireland and became a noted sire of international eventers, including Shear l’Eau (individual gold at 2004 Olympics) and Shear H2O (team silver at 2000 Olympics). Halla (1996) – She is a Baden-Württemberg with a well-bred

Hanoverian dam and a very influential Thoroughbred sire. Tachypous (1974) – This Thoroughbred, who raced and stood

in the U.K., is related to Marius 110 (individual and team gold in 2008 Olympics), Miners Frolic (individual and team bronze 2008 Olympics plus team silver 2012 Olympics), California 45 (international jumper), Amistad (eventer at 2012 Olympics), Clifton Lush (international eventer), Pandora Emm (international eventer), Red Robin (international eventer), etc. Mary Green (1974) – Also born in the U.K., this Thoroughbred

mare is related to several competitors at the 2012 Games: Lenamore (29th individually at age 19), Exponential (individually

22nd), Lully des Aulnes (eventing), Josephine (46th), Mas Guapo (dressage 2012) and Lord de Theize (=12th in jumping). Heraldik (1982) – He was a Czech-born Thoroughbred that

competed as a show jumper; however, he is best known as a top sire of eventers. In fact, he led the list published by the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses for eventing sires in 2011. However, his influence is actually found through all three Olympic disciplines. At the 2012 Games in London alone, his influence was found in the ancestry of Butts Abraxxas (eventing), Butts Leon (eventing), Happy Times (eventing) and Ekwador (dressage). Additionally he is the sire of Herald 3 (international jumper), Hoyo de Monterey (international jumper), Happy Times (international eventer) and a host of others. Grey Girl (1982) – She was a Hanoverian by Godehard, who is in the pedigrees of Blue Loyd 12 (individual bronze-medal- winning jumper at 2012 Olympics) and Latina (eventer at 2012 Olympics). Her paternal grandsire, Gotthard, was in the pedigrees of additional Olympic competitors in London, including Nereo (individual 4th in eventing), Coryolano (dressage) as well as the jumpers Cadjanine Z, Nino des Buissonnets (individual gold), Or de la Charboniere, Sultan V and Temple Road. And her maternal grandsire is in the ancestry of Salinero (medal-winning dressage horse at three Olympics: 2004, 2008, 2012), Seven Up (international jumper), Serve Well (international eventer), etc. At first glance one might be

tempted to say that Sam is a Warmblood and leave it at that, but, in fact, Sam is ¾ Thoroughbred and his ancestry, where not eventing specific, leans to jumping more than dressage just like so many that have taken the eventing gold at the Games.
