Stud-Book sBs D

r. Marc Pierson has been the general secretary of the Stud-Book sBs for several years and is very knowledgeable about the European equestrian industry. Dr. Pierson

answers questions about the history, philosophies and success of Belgium’s unique registry, Stud-Book sBs.

Question: Since you know the structure of the European equestrian world so well, can you tell us a little about the Belgian registries? MP: Although Belgium is a small country, it has three sport horse studbooks. Each studbook has its own philosophy, rules and criteria with a common goal of excellence in sport. In the U.S., the BWP (Belgish Warmbloed Paard) is the most

well-known since it has been present there for several decades. But in Belgium, the Stud-Book sBs is the oldest studbook and was created at the beginning of the twentieth century for the needs of the Belgian army. We are based in the French speaking part of Belgium, in the city of Namur. Te BWP was organized towards the middle of the twentieth century to provide a support for horse breeding, along with other various farming activities, for the sons of local farmers in the Dutch-speaking region. Te third studbook, Zangersheide, is probably the least recognizable in America, and was founded much later in 1992. As time went on, both original studbooks have undergone

major changes due to historical events and the modernization of society. Te sBs and BWP studbooks have their own original studbook records, breeding examinations, organize their own stallion inspections, belong to the WBFSH (World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses) and are recognized by Belgian, European and world organizations. Tese two studbooks aim at having high standards in breeding.

Te BWP has more horses registered in its studbook than the Stud-Book sBs. Nevertheless, the sBs has always focused on the highest standard of quality in the performances of its horses. Te Stud-Book sBs has approved world renowned jumper stallions such as Baloubet du Rouet (multi-champion), Kannan, Toulon, Nabab de Reve and the World Champion Vigo D’Arsouilles, to name a few.

Question: Tis brings us to the recent history of the sBs. What are the latest developments at Stud-Book sBs? MP: sBs is unique in that from the outset, our goal has been to stay at the forefront of technology, whether it is zoology, information

technology or communication. For stallion prospects, a rigorous veterinary examination (primarily looking for OCD) prior to the stallion inspection is mandatory and performed at Belgian universities of veterinary medicine. Soon in America, we will be partnered with a leading veterinary school to help with that process for stallions based in North America. Also, DNA testing has been conducted for many years on the horses registered at birth in the Stud-Book sBs. A few years ago, we started using letter designations, or

labels, for the quality of mares. (‘O’ stands for obstacle, or jump.) R.O. (Recommended for Jumping), R.O.+ (Recommended for Jumping based on own performance), E.O. (Elite Jumper), R.D. (Recommended for Dressage), R.D.+ ( Recommended for Dressage based on own performance) and E.D. (Elite Dressage). Te label “R” describes the broodmares whose mother, siblings or offspring have obtained outstanding performances. Te labels “R+” and “E” describe the broodmares that have themselves obtained outstanding performances during their career in jumping or dressage. One important way that we communicate with all our members,

but also with the whole equestrian world, is through our magazine called sBs Magazine written in Dutch and French. We are hoping to add the English version to the magazine as well. Our web site www.sbsnet.be is now in the four languages of French, Dutch,
