In September, last year we were invited to Malaysia to carry out a needs survey of public schools in Malaysia and we

toured right across the two land masses that form Malaysia, looking at different schools - urban, rural, primary, secondary and some vernacular schools.
We observed lessons, interviewed
teachers and students, spoke to district and state education officers and were
introduced to the unstinting generosity of Malaysian hospitality.

When there is rote learning - there is little evidence of genuine creativity and metacognition is largely absent. But we also found a teaching workforce that was willing to embrace change.
