The Tree Map is used for classifying, identifying a main idea and its supporting details. It helps sort things and ideas into categories or groups. When creating the Tree Map you have to write the category name or the main idea of the
topic on the top line. Then add a connecting line down to link to individual sub-categories or supporting ideas. Below each sub-category or supporting idea you can add lines for the specific members of the category or specific details for the supporting ideas. Tree Maps can also be used for an informal grouping of themes, concepts or ideas or for gathering details about story elements. See the example below:
