PERSPECTIVE 1WITH0 QUESTIONS RYAN BUSCH September marks the one-year

anniversary of our Publisher, Ryan Busch, taking part in Today’s Campus. We turned the tables to

ask Ryan about this year’s peaks and pits, and what’s in store in 2013. Thanks for all that you do, Ryan!

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE 2011-2012 YEAR FOR YOU? Tat’s a tough one. Holding the proofs of my first issue as publisher was pretty exciting. Interviewing Michael Crow at Arizona State University was also a huge thrill. Te entire year has been exciting.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST SURPRISE YOU’VE ENCOUNTERED IN YOUR FIRST YEAR AS PUBLISHER OF TODAY’S CAMPUS? How important the media is to higher education leaders. We’ve heard from and spoken with some of the most amazing people in higher education today. Playing a role in communicating their insights and vision for higher education is a great honor.

WHAT ADVANCES DO YOU FORESEE WITHIN EDUCATION IN THE NEXT YEAR? MOOCs are a big deal -I think we’ll see a lot more on that front. But a greater shift is happening in higher ed. Greater access to information and technology continues to accelerate new ideas across the spectrum. Financial programs, learning technology and enterprise technology integrations–there seems to be great change afoot.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DEPART- MENT TO READ WITHIN TODAY’S CAM- PUS? My background is in marketing and communica- tions–I’m drawn to that. But I’ve been fascinated by innovations in risk management, technology, and the rest–they all catch my eye. I read cover to cover!

WHAT WAS THE TRANSITION LIKE FOR YOU INTO THE MEDIA/HIGHER EDUCATION INDUSTRY? Well, I’ve been communicating innovations for years. Te transition was fairly fluid–it was an opportunity to talk about all of the great things rather than just the great things that I was working on myself.

WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS PUBLISHER SO FAR THIS YEAR? Don’t get me started! Nothing is as easy as you hope it will be. I’m not a big fan of back office operations–but you can’t live without them! Te challenge for me has been embracing those things.

IT’S YOUR DAY OFF. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Seriously? What’s a day off? In all honesty, I don’t think I’ve spent a single day in the last year without at least reading an email or working on some minor detail. But...if you want to really pin-me-down...I’m probably spending time with my wife doing anything but reading an email or working on a minor detail.

WHAT WORDS DO YOU LIVE BY? Again, that’s tough. I’m a former actor and I’ve per- formed a lot of Shakespeare. Words are everything. My head’s filled with the voices of different characters and writing of different authors. I tend to recall the right words I need when I need them.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST VICE? Netflix. I’m constantly playing something from Netflix. I can’t stand it when things are too quiet.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FOR- WARD TO IN 2013? Volume 5 of Today’s Campus of course!
