Dubbed “Te Sports Marketing Guru” by Sports Illus- trated, Dr. Bernie Mullin has made a name for himself in the professional sports arena. Born in the UK, Mullin played semi-professional soccer before coming stateside to pursue the professional route. Upon teaching at summer camps in Maine, he received a scholarship to attend grad school at the University of Kansas, where he received his PhD in business. Upon graduating, Mullin took over the University of Massachusetts sports management program. From there, Mullin established his own consulting business called Na- tional Sport Management, which catered to pro- fessional teams. In 1985, he was hired by the Pitts- burgh Pirates to do consulting and management, and ultimately became Senior Vice President. Mullin has also served as the Senior Vice President of business of the Colorado Rockies, Senior Vice President of Mar- keting and Team Business Operations for the National Basketball Association, and President/CEO of the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Trashers, and Phillips Arena, as well as Vice Chancellor of Athletics at the University of Denver.
