He was the man ridiculed by critics for using the peace sign; for having a voice on the social and political spectrum of the world, heeding warning way before the UK riots blew up; he was frontman, the Reverend, team player in Mongrel – and he couldn’t seem to do right for doing wrong. Fans never slated him though, and Jon McClure at some point realised that, and started enjoying himself…

I was worried, calling you, because I saw that you’ve been having loads of prank calls – I thought you might think I was another one! But you’ve found out who it is… Yeah, I put that on Twitter so that it’d scare the shit out of them. I’ve got a lot of bad boys, so I just tried to do that, ‘don’t mess with me mate, ‘cause you know I’ll put your number on Twitter, don’t you?!’ Every now and again I get a call at, like, four in the morning, people shouting “ Reverend, reverend!” Show a bit of class, eh? You know what I mean?!

You’ve kindly given us your time before Jon, when you were in Mongrel –

- Were it at the Norwich gig?

It was over the phone, but my colleague and I got to see you at the gig when you came to Norwich and you

tore it up. Mongrel was brilliant and energetic… Well you know what’s funny about that night - a bit of a mad one like – well that night, this dude turns up called David Gray, I don’t know if you know him?

Yeah, we do, he’s an old Outline writer! Well he come up to me, and I’ve met him before ‘cause he’s photographed us and shit, and he’s gone to us, “there’s this lad outside and he’s a bit of a fan and he wants to support you – have you got a support band for

tonight?” And I was like, “as it goes, we haven’t actually.” So he comes in, this kid, and plays and we were sat in us dressing room for hours after, like, having a spliff and that and I never think nowt more about it until I’m at this music awards thing and this kid comes up to me, hugging me and I were chatting to him for a bit. Our manager’s like, ‘ere, you know that’s Ed Sheeran, don’t you?!’ So I’ve just stayed in touch with him ever since then, like, but I met him in Norwich, which is a bit of a mad story!

With Mongrel, you started that band as a kind of antidote to the indie band that your management kind of wanted you do be, but this time around with Reverend, you’ve been able to take all that and do Reverend your way, haven’t you? I’ve loved it, actually, it’s been amazing; we’ve had a proper resurgence, you know, like album’s done dead well in the Top 20 again and we’ve absolutely smashed festivals. I’d been doing this Reverend Sound System and I was

people want someone to go, ‘do you wanna just forget it and have a really good party?!
