Global Scrapbook, continued... A Shamrock in Ireland
Jim Steele, longtime manager for the Rooney Fami- ly’s breeding farm Shamrock (Woodbine) as well as a prominent leader in the Thoroughbred industry, trav- eled in November 2011 to the Rooney’s farm in Ire- land: Eyrefi eld Horse Stud in County Kildare outside of Dublin, and then spend about two weeks touring with his son Michael.
Saddle fi tter and Equiery ad- vertiser Gina Perilla on board a shark diving boat of the coast of Guadalupe, Mexico!
On a recent visit to England, Jay Griswold & Ross Peddicord visited the yard of trainer Anne Duffi eld and her husband George, a former champion jockey in the UK. From left: Ped- dicord, Anne Duffi eld, George Duffi eld, Gris- wold. Griswold has hunted with the Duffi elds with the Bedale Hunt in their home country in Yorkshire.
Acrophobia is apparently not a problem for Jim, as he crosses the famous Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge dangling 98’ above a rocky gorge in County Antrim, Northern Ireland! (Go, Jim!)
Author and horsewoman Valerie Or- mond and husband Jaime Navarro (Bowie) in Ireland September visiting with the Kerry Bog
Ponies...and not dis- cussing the Navy/Notre Dame game.
Mary Guinness with British 3-Day Olympic team member Mary King at William Fox-Pitt’s yard in Dorset, England. Mary Guinness is a native Marylander, who lives in England and operates Biddesden Stud with her husband, Finn, but also maintains a home in Annapolis.
Publisher Crystal Kimball (center) with husband Jona- than and sister-in- law Heather (neither of whom ride) on a jungle ride outside of Jaco, Costa Rica. Discovery Horse Tours was a refresh- ing surprise in a cul- ture in which geld- ing is for sissies and chain or wire is con- sidered to be perfect- ly ordinary bits. The company is owned by British ex-pats Chris and Andrea Wady. Andrea is a former Pony Clubber who uses a combination of Pony Club principles paired with Parelli techniques to retrain formerly sour local horses (mostly of Spanish-breed descent) into solid, happy packers. Andrea starts by simply taking away all bits and, in some cases, bridles (see The Equiery’
Facebook page for a video of Crystal loping bridleless). Discover Horses is the only equine outfi tter around Jaco to have access to a 1,500 acre private rain forest and farm reserve, complete with monkeys, coatis, deer, toucans, mascaws and a waterfall!
