A Cultural Connection Earlier this year, Vicky Meyer of Breezy Run
Farm in Queen Anne’s County received an interesting email requesting that her farm be part of a State Department tour for four entrepreneurs from Iraq. Her initial thought was the email had to be spam but she called the number listed and was surprised when she got a return call stating the request was legitimate. It turns out that the World Trade Center Institute in Baltimore was working with the State Department on an Interna- tional Visitor Leadership Program and found Breezy Run via Internet searches. T e objective of the visit was to look at how people in the U.S. transform ideas into a busi- ness, as well as how they deal with fi nancing and the challenges of regulations at various levels of government. Each of the Iraqi del- egation had expertise in a variety of business pursuits and interests related to agriculture and would be touring the U.S. for three weeks. On May 10, the delegation arrived at Breezy
Run after a visit to the Maryland Department of Agriculture headquarters. T e tour of the farm included not just the barns and pastures but the new vineyard and manure collection sys- tem. T ere was lots of discussion about banking systems and how the farm is fi nanced, as well as federal grants and agricultural and building codes. Vicky stated, “T ey asked about busi- ness planning and were very interested in how
T e group also talked about arena footing, fl y predators, and relationships between farms and support organizations such as the Maryland Horse Council.
