As chewing gum brands seek new ways to engage with customers and drive brand loyalty, Payne’s Supastrip VDP (variable data print) tear tape is designed to combine easy opening with the delivery of unique number on pack promotions. The promotional code is printed on the Payne tape used to open the pack, the idea being that the promotion is placed directly into the consumer’s hands at the time of opening. According to Payne, one promotional campaign run

combination that cuts and wraps up to 1300 individual products and overwraps them in hermetically sealed stick packs. The company says this combination enables efficient product handling, minimised wrapping material consumption, a low noise level (due to the continuous motion technology) and a ‘superior wrap quality’. For preformed gum products, such as ball gum, dies formed gum, or dies formed chewy candies, Theegarten offers various wrapping machines for flowpack or twist wrap. The company’s cut and twist wrap machines cover three speed categories: the EW 5, with a speed up to 700p/m; the U1, with a speed up to 1000p/m: and the high speed continuous motion WHD, with a speed up to 1800p/m. The U1 and the WHD machine are equipped with servo motor technology in a bid to achieve precise print registration and wrapping material cut off. Once again, the company states that this ensures economical use of wrapping material. The U1 is, in a modified version, also available for


bespoke applications. The U1-II and U1-III are designed for stick shapes of up to 100mm length, while the U1- TR produces a face cut. Theegarten’s latest development in the cut and wrap segment is the FPW5, which forms and cuts products from a mass rope and wraps them at a speed of up to 1500p/m. According to Theegarten, it represents a ‘common modular platform’, together with the FPH5 (hard caramels) and the FPC5 (chocolate articles). All three machine types feature the same or similar basis modules and optional extras.


The synchronisation between the feed and the forming, cutting and wrapping process is electronically controlled, while the rope in- feed can be equipped with two - four pairs of forming rollers. A continuously running rotary knife is designed to ensure a straight cut off of the single products. The cut and

Payne says it is targeting both points accumulation and instant win promotions. Tape from Payne, part of the Coated & Security Products division of Filtrona plc, can also be run across multiple stock keeping units for promotional purposes. Martin Dallas, Payne’s managing director, Packaging Solutions, told Kennedy’s Confection: “As a gateway to promotions, Supastrip VDP tear tape is highly effective. Tear tape not only provides easy opening to the pack, it also ensures the code is at the consumer’s fingertips for entering promotions online or via SMS registration - simply, quickly and effectively. As the need to communicate and interact with consumers increases, Supastrip VDP gives brand owners a direct line to those consumers.”


wrap machine range also includes a machine for Vienna fruit fold style, which is popular in eastern Europe - the EW 10 is designed to cut and wrap up to 300p/m in this wrapping style. According to Theegarten-Pactec, its cut and wrap equipment caters for almost all common wrap styles, in three different speed categories: up to 600p/m; up to 1000p/m; and 1300+p/m. The figures speak for themselves. So far, the organisation says that more than 3000 cut and wrap machines have been installed all over the world.
