Gum base In a bid to satisfy the needs of customers for different types of gum base, Fimcobase has developed a range of products. These have been created for bubble and chewing gum base, functional and special products, and are said to maintain relative prices.

The gum base producer was established in Egypt in 1996, when a production centre was launched to supply local chewing gum makers with a capacity of 3000 tonnes/year. Some 15 years later, Fimcobase was providing gum to most of the Egyptian market, Africa and Middle East – as well as some countries in Latin America and Asia. Fimcobase says its ingredients are selected amongst the highest food grade and the company a member of a number of associations. These include: the International Chewing Gum Association; Industries Chambre de Commerce Egyptienne d’Alexandrie; Federation of Egyptian Industries; Egyptian Exporters Association; and New Borg el Arab Industries Association.

Natural ingredients

Swiss natural ingredients producer, WILD Flavors, says it has a corporate philosophy of focusing on natural ingredients. In terms of gum production, WILD has not been afraid to invest in research and development, sourcing ideas across the globe, primarily based on consumer tastes.

WILD’s in house application specialists and chemists have developed a number of ingredients for fruit gums, as well as exotic tropical flavours. According to the firm, natural plant extracts are ideal for giving gum and jelly products a healthy boost. WILD’s Wellness gum range contains natural plant extracts, designed to provide ‘added appeal’. The latest tastes include plum, sage, juniper, cardamom, cinnamon and liquorice, passion fruit, ginger, ginkgo and guarana.

Since WILD’s acquisition of natural peppermint ingredients specialist, A.M. Todd Group, it is also able to offer natural mint oils and flavourings. Manufacturers can choose from traditional types of mint varietals, such as peppermint and spearmint for use in chewing gum, peppermint candies and other mint confectionary products. Examples of new creative product options include sweets that combine fruit and mint flavours. Because the A.M. Todd Group operates in the Northwestern United States and India, it is able to provide a steady supply of crops. Both countries rank among the world’s most important mint growing regions.

A chewing gum based on resveratrol could soon be on the market, according to Danish organisation, Fluxome and medical gum manufacturer Fertin. Resveratrol is a polyphenol, part of a group of chemical substances called stilbenes. It occurs naturally and is found in low concentration in fruits, such as grapes and blueberries. According to Fluxome, the preventative features of resveratrol are seen in their purest form in plants, as many produce it when they are attacked by bacteria or fungi. Grape plants produce resveratrol as an innate defence mechanism against stress in particular, cold temperatures and excess moisture.

The trans-isomeric form of resveratrol has been researched and in various studies show that resveratrol influences risk factors related to aging health conditions, such as inflammation and cardiovascular health. The component has also been linked to health benefits, such as reduced cancer risk and Alzheimer’s.

Fluxome claims that the trans-resveratrol is completely taste and odour free, so can be used in applications such as chewing gum. The company is now supplying the ingredient to supplement makers and plans to move the bulk of its production from the US to the EU. Confectioners can sell resveratrol chewing gum in Europe, provided they comply with regulations that the product is marketed as having ;functional or fortified properties’. A Fluxome spokesman said: “Fluxome is a company providing long term solutions through sustainable nutraceutical ingredients. We are constantly looking ahead for future opportunities, while simultaneously working on the most current material of today. We have several projects in our pipeline which we are working hard to achieve the industry’s highest level of quality.” Fluxome’s natural resveratrol is manufactured by a fermentation process, which is designed to ensure a product with high purity (minimum 98%). Because the purity is so high - and a relatively small amount is needed - it means it can easily be applied in a blended supplement.
