Fifty years in horticulture

AFTER more than 50 years in horticulture, Rosewarne Nursery manager Stan Williams, from Camborne, retires this month.

Stan started working at Rosewarne in the early 1960s when it was still an experimental station for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. He worked his way up from being a tractor driver to becom- ing the youngest section foreman ever at that time in charge of brassi- cas, looking after and growing all cauliflower and cabbage production. Stan then moved to North Devon where he spent some time farm- ing, later returning to Cornwall where he spent eight years at Wheal Jane tin mine. Stan explained: ‘This was a complete change but my family were miners in Cornwall, so it was nice to finish the family tree working as a miner.’As the mine closed Stan went back to his love of plants and managed a bedding plant nursery called Woodlands at Praze-an-

Beeble, near Camborne. Burncoose Nursery was the next stop where Stan says he learnt a lot from Charles Williams and David Knuckey. He was asked to ap- ply for a vacancy at Rosewarne, which by then had become part of Duchy College, and re- turned to where his ca- reer began, building a viable wholesale com- mercial nursery which is now known as Rose- warne Nursery.

Awards

Stan has won a num- ber of awards at the Royal Cornwall Show, including bronze, silver gilt, gold, two large gold awards and the Trelawney Cup. Stan’s interest in plants began when his mum gave him a piece of her garden for him to grow parsley for his un- cle’s butcher’s shop when he was just nine. ‘She is now 93 and still loves plants, so I guess I must be a chip off the old block! I will be sad to leave but other challenges lay ahead,’ added Stan.
