DANWellstead and John Teeman went back to Cornwall College

Scholarships for ex-students

TWO former Cornwall Col- lege students have each been awarded a scholarship by their university in recognition of them gaining top marks and passing their first year of study with flying colours. After scoring the highest marks in their class, produc- ing an excellent standard of work and successfully com- pleting their first year, Dan Wellstead, 21 from Cam- borne, and John Teeman, 26 from Redruth, have been awarded the High Achievers Scholarship by Edge Hill Uni-

versity. This gives them £1,000 each to help with the cost of their studies next year. Dan and John both studied the Media EDEXCEL Na- tional Diploma at Cornwall College Camborne before en- rolling on the BA Film and TV Production course at Edge Hill University in Lancashire last year.

They arrived back in Corn- wall recently to spend their summer holidays at home be- fore returning to Lancashire to embark on their second year, and dropped in to the

college to catch up with some of their former tutors.

Ian said it was great to be awarded the scholarship in re- turn for all his hard work. ‘I really feel that my course at Cornwall College gave me a head start; I joined with a huge amount of confidence and had a great skills base to build upon,’ he added. John added: ‘It was a shock and surprise to be awarded the scholarship. I had no idea it even existed. ‘It’s nice to be rewarded for my hard work.’

STUDENTS Emma Pearn, Mary Willis and Lauren Mankee with their results

All hard work

pays off From Page 1

Redruth student Tom Gainey achieved an A in English, B in media studies and a C in poli- tics and history. These results mean that Tom has been accepted into the University of Ex- eter to study English literature starting this month. Tom said: ‘I’m really happy with my results; they are the grades I was predicted – more or less – and now I get to study the degree I wanted to at Exeter Uni Tremough Campus which is great.’

Camborne student Emma Pearn, 18, has had to battle postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) while study- ing. The syndrome causes an abnormal in- crease in heart rate leading to dizziness and fainting, and she was also been diag- nosed with dyslexia within the first fort- night of studying A- levels at Cornwall Col- lege. Despite missing lengthy periods of col-

lege and having to ad- just to different ways of studying to aid her dyslexia, Emma achieved two As and a B in her A-levels in business, law and psy- chology, and has a place on the foundation degree in business at Cornwall College where she has decided to continue her studies. ‘I’m so happy with my results. These are pretty much grades I was predicted which gives me more than enough UCAS points to stay on at Cornwall College and study the foundation degree business course in Sep- tember. ’

Proud

Russell Lawrance, head of A-levels at Cornwall College, said results day was when all of the hard work by the students and their teachers paid off. ‘I’m so proud of each and every one of our A- level students and I wish them the best of success,’ he said.
