3 Man

admits benefit fraud

THERE were near-perfect conditions for the second running of Hayle Surf Life Saving Club’s (SLSC) Surf to Salt Board Race.

The 3km paddleboard race from Hayle’s Bluff beach took competitors out around the estuary marker buoys and back up the river, finishing at the viaduct end of Hayle harbour. A small ground swell on the back of an incoming tide allowed some competitors to ride the peeling wave into the river mouth, helping them jostle for position before the gru- elling final 1km flat water paddle into the finish. A to- tal of 79 paddlers lined up at the start, including top competitors from across the South West as well as a

handful of travelling Aus- tralian surf lifesavers. Local RNLI lifeguard su- pervisor Ollie Shilston was first home in 20min 39sec ahead of Nick Healey and Tim Brace.

In a hard fought battle for the open (lifesaving board) category, last year’s winner George Haynes, of Portreath SLSC, edged out Aussie lifeguard colleague Michael Saal in 22min 33sec with Andrew Byatt (Perranporth SLSC) third.

Stand-up paddling ladies had quick times with Anna Shekhdar first, Louise Gapp second and Kim Marie Clothier third. Mesha Ward- man (Portreath SLSC) took the ladies’ open (lifesaving board) title by only one sec-

ond from Emily Corin (Hayle SLSC). In the ju- niors, Charlie Haynes (Portreath SLSC), younger brother to open winner George, came 15th overall to win the junior boys’ cate- gory with Nick Pearson (Hayle) second. The junior girls’ category was won by Anna Steele-Parkins (Portreath SLSC) ahead of clubmate Emily Theobold. Hayle SLSC club captain Dave Parker dug deep to keep one title on home turf by winning the male mas- ters category with the mas- ters female title going to St Ives SLSC’s Jo Hill.

The presentation took place in Foundry Square’s Salt Bar. Proceeds help in the running of Hayle SLSC.

AT a sentencing hearing at Truro Magistrates’ Court, Julian Watt, formerly from Redruth and now of Oakfield Road, Falmouth, was given a 12-month community or- der in respect of a housing benefit fraud totalling £7,585.96. Watt had earlier pleaded guilty to three counts of failing to promptly report to Cornwall Coun- cil that he was no longer unem- ployed; that he had commenced paid employment and that he had vacated his former residence in Green Lane, Redruth. The matter has been adjourned for sentencing. Watt was sentenced to the 12- month community order with the requirement that he has to com- plete 100 hours of unpaid work.

Confidential

He was also ordered to pay £720 costs to Cornwall Council. The overpaid benefits are being recov- ered from Watt by the council. Cornwall Council says it oper- ates a ‘zero tolerance’ policy to fraud and corruption.

‘If you suspect fraud is occur- ring we would be happy to talk to you on our confidential fraud hot- line. Call us on freephone 0800 7316125,’ said a spokesman.
