Hope for new NHS dentist After a break of two years Looe
could be set for a new NHS dental practice if enough people register a need for the service.
Cornwall councillor Armand Toms says he has been in talks with the Primary Care Trust (PCT) since 2010, when Looe lost its NHS dentist.
At a meeting recently he was told that there is money in the system for a new service in the town.
‘I was told, however, that currently there are a very small number of people on the register expressing an interest for an NHS service in Looe,’ said cllr Toms.
‘It is obvious that many residents are either not registering with a dentist or are travelling to access an NHS dentist.’
Cllr Toms is appealing for residents to register with the PCT and express a need to have an NHS dentist for adults in Looe.
‘The officers will be contacting practices to see if an NHS dentist will want to come to Looe,’ he added.
Bowlers have a new sign - thanks to volunteers
A new sign has been unveiled at Hannafore Bowling Club, replacing the previous sign which was inaccurate and worn out.
Town clerk Anne Frith said that as well as making the front of the club more appealing, the new sign was also a mark of respect and a thank you to the volunteers who run the putting green.
The facility is opened and closed by volunteer David Pickering each day, and he and the dedicated team work hard on the amenity.
‘They have raised somewhere in the region of £13,000 to £14,000.We used some of the money they’ve collected and took the initiative to replace the sign, which still said Caradon District Council.’
Canines have their own ‘Doggolympics’
Hillcrest House nursing home in Looe held its first canine Olympics – the Doggolympics.
The four-legged entrants received rosettes and certificates for their placing in categories such as ‘shiniest nose’ and ‘best biscuit catcher’ which were judged by Pluto!
At the end of an afternoon, which was thoroughly enjoyed by residents, visitors and staff, each dog which was entered was rewarded with a bag containing toys and treats to take home, and those on two legs had a cream tea.
‘I have had many conversations about the problems of residents getting to and from Liskeard and many other places to get dental cover.
