the campground, amongst the trees and bushes, deer roamed and raccoons came out at night. T e stars sparkled in the night sky and the reeds rustled in the wind. T e weather was more than we asked
for 70°F in the day with blue skies and no wind. Nights were cool and a campfi re closed each day with the promise of another outstanding sunny day. On a cloudy, rainy morning we started to
head home. T e winding coastal Highway 101 took us back across the Astoria Bridge and into Washington. Once across the bridge we continued north on Highway 101 through the historic towns of Illwaco and Chinook. T e highway took us away from the Pacifi c Ocean and through the town of Raymond on the Willapa River where fi sh markets, oyster and chowder bars line the streets. T e day was clear as we drove north to Highway 12. A short distance east along this highway we exited north onto Highway 108 which led us back onto Highway 101 again. T e leaves were brilliant gold and red and
the road almost deserted. A short distance north of the town of Shelton we entered the Olympic National Forest where the trees are massive and overhung the road. T e Hood Canal appeared on our right and we followed the coastline for many miles. It is beautiful with the water lapping the shore on one side and tall green forest on the other. T e winding highway passed many boats, marinas, small towns, cabins and houses hugging the shoreline along the canal as we wound our way north. T e weather was changing; fog greeted
us outside of historic Port Townsend as we made our way to Hudson Point Marina and RV Park on the edge of Admiralty Inlet outside the town. Once parked we walked the rocky beach in the rain. It was colder here as we watched the sailboats and fi shing boats sail by, and across the inlet the lights on Whidby Island shone. We made a 9:30am reservation on the
Port Townsend/Coupeville ferry for the next morning. It was cold and raining as we lined up at the ferry terminal for the 30-minute crossing. Aſt er a smooth sailing we docked at Coupeville on Whidby Island and turned onto Highway 20. T is highway took us through Oak Harbor and over Deception Pass then we came to a junction. We could turn leſt to Anacortes and Fidalgo Bay Campground or right continuing along Highway 20 to I-5. We turned leſt and stayed in Fidalgo Bay
Campground for two days. While we were there the “Old Time Fiddlers” had a practice in the clubhouse and we enjoyed an evening of music and wonderful entertainment. T en it was the last day of our holiday, as we drove Highway 20 to I-5 and exited north
to Bellingham and the border. Fall is an excellent time for a road trip. T e weather changes oſt en but the scenery is
spectacular anytime. We experienced sunny warm days to cold rainy windy times but we still enjoyed every minute of our holiday. F
