Tedeschi Trucks Band Live, Everybody’s Talkin’ (Sony Masterworks) follows on the heels of the band’s Grammy winning debut release. arrangement of Nilsson’s “Everybody’s Talkin’” to the pure soulful beauty of “Midnight in Harlem, “ to Susan Tedeschi’s power soaked vocal on the blues smoker “That Did It” and their cover of the old r&b chestnut “Uptight,” the CD is a joy from beginning to end. Susan and Derek and company seem to do no wrong. Ah, yeah....Chuck Leavell pays tribute to a few of his own piano playing heroes with Back to the Woods (Evergreen Arts) , a 15-track romp that gives the Rolling Stones band leader a chance to spread his wings on tunes made famous by the earliest pioneers of blues piano - guys like Ray Charles, Leroy Carr, Otis Spann and many more. Chuck brings in a few guitar friends to add to the fun, most notably one Keith Richards and a youngster named John Mayer. It is all good. Hey, this is Chuck Leavell, what else would you expect? ( Quincy Tate, Real to Reel ( is the lat- est treasure presented by David Cantonwine from the archives of EQT, the greatest Southern rock band you’ve never heard of. Well, except for us lucky few who realized the genius of Donnie McCormick and the boys long ago. This two disc

set was drawn from a collection if old reel tapes from 30 - 40 years ago. Live cuts fro early club gigs, studio outtakes, concerts and rehearsals. The sonic quality varies, obviously, but as for the musicianship and spirit, it is fully intact through- out. EQT is was and is the South’s best kept secret, but with these archival releases, the secret is finally out....Paul Thorn, one of our greatest contemporary songwriters, and may I add, singers, returns with a collection of cover tunes he has been hankering to record called What the Hell is Goin’ On (Perpetual Obscurity). The title track smokes. It was written by, and includes a guest appearance by, the great Elvin Bishop. Thorn pulls off an apt cover of Ray Wylie Hubbard’s excellent “Snake Farm” and “She’s Got a Crush On Me,” penned by our friend “Funky” Donnie Fritts. Other highlights include Paul’s renditions of Allen

Toussaint’s “Wrong Number” and “Walk in My Shadow” - yes, the one by Bad Company. Of course no man is an island. and Paul has sur- rounded himself with the best musicians a boy from Tupelo, Mississippi could ever wish for. (No, not James Burton or Scotty Moore, that was the other boy from Tupelo.) Paul and his manag- er-co-writer Billy Maddox have a stellar band that features Bill Hinds on red hot guitar, Michael “Dr. Love” Graham on keys, Ralph Friedrichsen on bass and Jeffrey Perkins on drums. Oh, by the way, there is another guest artist, Delbert McClinton wears out the harmoni- ca on “Bull Mountain Bridge.” Just another excellent P.T. album.
