apping into the creative spirit is often easier said than done. Even though we all have a bit of creativity in

us, we can’t always summon it at will. Some people say they don’t have a creative bone in their bodies, but I don’t think that’s true. I believe we manifest creativity in different ways, such as making pottery, writing, acting, drawing, lawyering, legislating, marketing, teaching, bak- ing. You get the drift. For me, it’s always been writing. And with practice comes, if not perfection, at least

some degree of ease as our creative muscles are used and strengthened. My own creative life began during my early childhood in North Dakota. The year was 1968. I remember sitting at the desk in the family room, where an old-fashioned, 1950s-style typewriter with large, round keys awaited. I de- cided to write my life story. Laboriously I pounded out each letter of my brief au- tobiography. Every time I made a mistake, I started over with a brand-new sheet. “My name is Jacquelyn Grothe. I am six years old. I have a sister. Her name

is Sherry. I have two cats. I live in Forman.” I sat there for a long time staring at that piece of paper, proud that I finally covered the distance of six sentences with no mistakes and wondered what else I could possibly include. Thinking of noth- ing further to say, I determined that I needed to go out and have adventures and then would return and pick up the nail-biting narrative. Here I am now, still living the adventure, still writing and doing what I can to create an atmosphere conducive to creativity in my life: nature walks, museum visits, meditating and lots of reading—books, blogs and magazines. Our themes for September are Creativity and Yoga, both of which can benefit

and are available for anyone. In Judith Fertig’s article “Exploring Our Creative Side,” we look at the variety

of creative outlets available to all of us: music, dance, art. On page 19 you’ll find a local listing of just some of the rich and varied community arts available in the Twin Cities.

September is Yoga Month across the country, and in our Fit Body section we feature an article called “Injury-Free Yoga: Proven Approaches for Safe Practice” by Lynda Bassett. We also have a special page listing a few of the local yoga stu- dios that invite practitioners of all levels into their studios.
