ommunity arts groups are plentiful in the Twin Cities area and are readily acces-


sible via the Internet. Also, check the calendar sections of commu- nity and neighborhood magazines and newspapers and tune in to word of mouth. Here is a sam- pling of what’s out there.


Dance


Cheek to Cheek Ballroom Dance Stu- dio (CheekToCheekDanceStudio.com) Located in Coon Rapids, this studio offers a variety of group and private classes in an assortment of dance styles, including ballroom, swing, Lat- in, nightclub, belly dance and Middle Eastern dance.


Cinema Ballroom (CinemaBallroom. com) Located in St. Paul, Cinema Ballroom teaches all kinds of partner dance, including Latin, ballroom, swing and nightclub. It features “social dancing made easy” for weddings, dance events and dance sport for all ages.


Dancers Studio (DancersStudio.com) Voted “Best Ballroom Dance Studio”, this St. Paul studio offers a full array of classes and events. Learn to dance for a wedding or take lessons on salsa, swing, rumba, waltz, cha-cha, foxtrot and other styles. Yoga, pilates and zumba are also offered.


Music


MacPhail Center for Music (MacPhail.org) Located in Minneapolis, Apple Valley and White Bear Lake, MacPhail Center for Music is open to anyone explor-


ing music for the first time, renewing a passion for music or continuing to develop musical skills. MacPhail of- fers classes and group instruction and events for children and adults.


West Bank School of Music (WestBank Music.org) West Bank, in Minneapo- lis, offers instruction in 30 different instruments, plus voice. At this “differ- ent” music school, West Bank teachers discover how each individual learns best and helps to “nourish the soul” through music.


Storytelling Northstar Storytelling (NorthstarSto rytelling.org) This Minneapolis-based nonprofit serves storytellers and listen- ers throughout the state. It sponsors regular storytelling events in the Twin Cities, including an annual storytelling festival. Events and membership are open to the public.


Theater Lakeshore Players (LakeshorePlayers. com) Located in White Bear Lake, this theater company provides community enrichment opportunities through the performing arts, including classes for children, teens and adults. In the 2012-13 season, it will present seven productions.


Morris Park Players (MorrisParkPlay- ers.org) One of the longest operating community theaters in Minneapolis, the Morris Park Players specialize in musical theater productions. There are several ways to participate, especially through volun- teering and auditioning for parts.


Visual Arts Art-A-Whirl (nemaa.org) Art-A-Whirl, sponsored by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association and held each May, gives visitors the opportunity to meet the artists who make the community so vibrant and purchase their artwork. Art-


A-Whirl also offers several ways of be- coming more involved in the local arts community, through volunteer work, donations, membership, sponsorship and advertising.


White Bear Center for the Arts (White BearArts.org) WBCA believes the concepts experienced in the study and making of art heighten broad-thinking skills such as imagination, innovation, experimentation and problem-solving. The center offers more than 200 art classes each year at its facility in downtown White Bear Lake and other locations, as well as after-school art enrichment classes in several districts during the school year.


Writing The Loft Literary Center (Loft.org) At The Loft, in Minneapolis, accom- plished writers teach classes through- out the year, designed for a range of interests and for writers at all levels of development. The Loft offers classes in poetry, short story, memoir, fiction and other forms. Other practical classes introduce the realities of a writing career, such as working with agents and submitting to publishers. There are no grades or academic requirements. Tuition is based on a sliding-fee scale, with both scholarship and work-study opportunities available.


Minneapolis Writer’s Workshop (MN- Writers.org) Established in 1937, this eclectic mix of writers, ranging from beginners to longtime professionals, meets every Wednesday, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Black Forest Inn, in Minneapolis. The first Wednesday of every month is “Open Read Night”, whereby non-members are welcome to bring a piece of their writing for the workshop to critique. The next open reading is September 5.
