•Year 12 continued the tradition of welcoming children from London to Mayfield for a day of games, activities and barbeques!

Successful end to the Pentathlon season

•At Mayfield we celebrated the jubilee in style, from special jubilee cupcakes made by Food and Nutrition, to a ‘street party’ held in the dining room on Friday 1 June.

•A highlight of the term for girls in Connelly House was a visit to the British Wildlife Centre, where they were able to see many of Britain’s wild animals at close quarters!

•The Chicken Club were delighted to welcome seven chicks to the world in May. The girls observed the chicks and looked after them beautifully until they were old enough to start a new life on Miss Robinson’s farm.

•Boarders have enjoyed the annual strawberry picking trip, picking at least 3 times as many strawberries as ended up in the punnets! They then spent the next day making delicious jam!

O •As usual, this year’s Year 9 and 10 summer ball was a tremendous success and a good time was had by all!

•Saturday 19 May saw 40 prospective pupils enjoy a relaxed and sunny morning at Mayfield, during which they were able to try their hand at a variety of activities, from rounders and swimming to choral singing and fun Maths.

n Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May, Marianne Blaxland (Year

12) and Tara Keoshgerian (Year 9), both members of the Mayfield Modern Pentathlon Squad, set off to Surrey for the South East Region Pentathlon Competition. The Modern Pentathlon consists of five events: running, shooting, swimming, fencing and riding.

•Year 13 said farewell with a fanfare at the Leavers’ Ball at Barnsgate Manor Vineyard on Friday 23 June.

‘You can eat well, even on a budget’

•Celebrated children's author, Julie Hearn, visited Mayfield on Friday 25 May to talk to girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 about her novels, the creative writing process and where she finds inspiration.

A

s part of the Activities Week programme, a group of Year 12 students spent a food-filled morning on Tuesday

3 July at a cookery workshop run by Mrs Davies, intended to demonstrate how ‘you can eat well, even on a budget’ and to provide them with the basic kitchen knowledge that they will need to flourish at university, and beyond.

Having learnt some basic cooking skills, including making a roux sauce, baking, making choux pastry and pizza dough, the girls were allowed to choose what they wanted to make, and they cooked up a storm!

At the end of a long morning’s work, the girls had produced a banquet of, amongst other things, pizzas, salads, profiteroles and strawberry gateaux. The tired chefs then all sat down together to sample their creations and unanimously declared the morning a great success! They all left nicely satisfied, and having learnt a lot.

Both girls performed extremely well against tough competition which included a number of GB Squad members. Marianne rode to victory in the show jumping section of her age group, and was thrilled to have beaten two GB Squad members in the process!

This was the last Modern Pentathlon competition for this school year and I wish the whole squad all the success for next year.
