Art and Ceramics Private View wows the public S

t Leonards-Mayfield School celebrated another fine year of Art and Ceramics on Friday 15 June, when it opened its

doors to guests from across Kent and Sussex for its annual exhibition.

Each girl’s individual creative journey can be seen in the variety of subject matter on display, the diversity of styles, and the inventiveness and range of the materials and techniques employed by the students. Jenna Gearing, Year 13, produced a highly articulate sculpture of a man living in cardboard city, as well as a remarkably lifelike David Attenborough, using sculptors such as Rodinfor inspiration. Other students decided to focus on the chemistry behind the discipline.

Natasha Boumediene, Year 13, developed a series of reticulating glazes which she applied to some elegant hand- made bottle forms. Yo Yo Lei, Year 13, raised very serious issues in her depiction of unborn babies and babies’ heads, referring in particular to the late abortions of girl babies in China.

Head of Ceramics, Tim Rees commented: “Our senior students have produced some outstanding work this year, thanks to the students’ enthusiasm and ownership of their project work, and I’m really encouraged for the future. The younger girls find a great deal of inspiration from the show and they are keen to follow in the footsteps of the older students.”

Talented Sixth Former awarded top University Scholarship

Y

oyo Lei, Year 13, is celebrating after being awarded a scholarship to Cardiff University to study Ceramics. The award is even more

impressive for being unexpected: Yoyo had not applied for the award, so was surprised to receive a letter on May 3 from the University which explained that they wanted to offer the scholarship in the hope that she would take up a place at Cardiff, which is one of the UK's top modern Universities.

Mr Rees, Head of Ceramics, commented: “It is a fantastic achievement for Yoyo and a true recognition of the highly skilful and creative work that she produces in both Art and Ceramics. She is a very thoughtful and industrious student who will make the most of the opportunities presented to her at Cardiff which has an excellent reputation for Art and Ceramics. It should also be noted that Yoyo was offered a place without needing a foundation course, a requirement for most Arts courses at university.”
