Dotty the Lamb joins Ceramics Lesson! O
n Wednesday 2 May, Year 9 Ceramics pupils had a special treat: a visit from Dotty, a five week old lamb belonging to Harriet Lewin, our Ceramics
Assistant. Dottymodelled while the girls sculpted him. Sculpting directly from life is a very challenging way of working but also the most effective way of recording visual information. Dottymade a big impression on the girls and Harriet was more than a little concerned that he might have ended up in a pupil’s satchel!
Bricklehurst girls enjoy Ceramics workshop G
irls in Years 4 and 5 at Bricklehurst Manor Prep School enjoyed an afternoon ceramics workshop at Mayfield on 2 July. Mayfield’s experienced ceramics staff welcomed the girls
to the school studio, where they led a practical workshop on sculpting from clay. Each girl produced her own dog sculpture, which will be fired over the summer and sent to Bricklehurst for collection. The girls were also led through the School’s exhibition of this year’s A-Level and GCSE work, to give them some sense of how versatile ceramics can be, and what standards can be reached by girls who, in some instances, have only been studying ceramics for three years.
Head of Ceramics, Tim Rees commented: “Mayfield and Bricklehurst have a close relationship stretching back over many years, and it is always a great pleasure to be visited by its pupils. We saw some raw talent and potential on display from the girls, and a great sense of enthusiasm. I’m sure these girls will continue to enjoy their art.”
'Shakespeare Off by Heart' Competition M
ayfield held its first 'Shakespeare Off by Heart' competition on
Wednesday 27 June in the Concert Hall to mark the celebration of the World Shakespeare Festival.
Many girls had learnt substantial speeches perfectly and were tremendously captivating in their performances. Mrs Sue Gaisford, an Old Cornelian and Literary Editor of 'The Tablet' kindly judged the competition. She was 'mightily impressed' by the quality of the performances of many of the girls and found it difficult to choose between them.
In the end, the Year 7 prize was awarded to Elizabeth Morgan, the Year 9 prize to Madeline O'Conor and the overall winner of the 'Mayfield Shakespeare Cup 2012' and tickets to see Mark Rylanceplay Richard IIIat The Globe, was Ella Christie in Year 7.
I would like to thank all girls who took part or who came to support their friends. The quality of Mayfield's contestants was easily as good as (or better than) some of the performances that were seen on the BBC's competition recently. The competition will take place again next year with students being encouraged to pick their own speech.

Moonlight Catwalk raises more than just a smile
L
ate on Friday 15 June, MrsMargrett and a band of 59 intrepid pupils and staff set off for Tunbridge Wells to
take part in the Moonlight Catwalk, a challenging eight mile night-time trek through the town in aid of the Hospice in the Weald. Buoyed up by the sense of occasion and community, the group set off at 10.30pm, and fuelled by sweets, ice creams and chips, plus lots of encouragement from fellow walkers, everyone marched triumphantly through the finish line at 1am, exhausted but happy!
Eloise Stadler and Rebecca Cook, Year 9, were among the group and this is what they had to say: "The Moonlight Catwalk was a very fun experience and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Although it was quite challenging (as we didn't realise how far 8 miles actually was!) we all had a really great time walking and it felt amazing raising money for the Hospice In the Weald. It was great to have 59 pupils and staff doing the walk as we were all encouraging each other throughout the night. The atmosphere as we walked from 10.30pm till 1.00am was constantly full of energy and everyone was so positive and happy no matter how late at night it was!
Before we leftMrs Margrett painted our faces, which really got us all into the spirit! The community was really supportive and it was a really good chance for us to socialise and meet loads of new people. After we had completed the walk we were all so proud to have taken part in raising the money for the Hospice and we look forward to taking part next year as well!"
At the last count, the group had raised an impressive £1887 for Hospice in the Weald, but the total is still rising. Congratulations to everyone who took part!
