Is the course a Distance Learning Course?
Studying by distance learning means that you learn at a distance from your tutor and your fellow students. We aim to ensure that this ‘distance’ is only physical, and encourage contact between you and your tutor, and other students. The course design will facilitate open/flexible learning and the Modules are designed for independent learning. However, it would not be correct to say it could be undertaken solely by distance learning. The delivery of each Module requires a three-day introduction except Modules 1 and 2 (each requiring four days), here at the Medical School in Dundee. In addition specific Modules have additional clinics/workshops to achieve the learning and knowledge outcomes in the Module. The distance learning mode of study allows you to learn at your own pace, using specially designed materials which are easily integrated into your daily routine. This allows the remaining elements of the Module to be undertaken independently using a variety of electronic mentoring and supervision modes. Our distance learning approach is therefore particularly suitable for healthcare professionals and others who are unable to take time off work for full-time study.
Module 4 in particular will have a greater practical/skills learning component where those in roles/positions having clinics etc. would be able to undertake the learning and assessment in those locations with appropriate supervision. However, the course overall has many events and workshops to be undertaken and consequently it is therefore not designed as a distance learning course but facilitates open/flexible learning techniques allowing mutually agreed circumstances enabling many students to maintain their day-to-day work roles. Modules are also delivered twice during the academic year which affords greater flexibility for those undertaking part-time study. Those proposing a full-time one-year study period would have a workload inclusive of the dissertation project that would not readily lend itself to a distance learning mode.
So what are the advantages of the distance learning approach?
• You study at a pace that suits you • You can set your own deadlines • Take responsibility for directing your own learning • You study where it suits you • You study when it is convenient for you • You can study without leaving your employment • You can choose when to contact your tutor if you need support
