WHAT’S NEW IN OUR AREA

Advanced PET/CT A new positron emission tomography - computed tomography

(PET/CT) machine brings comfort and technology. This advanced PET/CT machine allows physicians to better determine whether a mass is cancerous or not with its high resolution PET and quality CT images. Patients are injected with radiotracer, a substance that cancer cells absorb, accumulate and metabolize more quickly than noncancerous cells. The metabolized radiotracer appears as a bright spot on the scan, allowing physicians to accurately pinpoint a tumor’s location.

There are several features that make this technology

beneficial for both physicians and patients. The PET/CT has an optimized system design with the highest sensitivity in the industry, which allows diseases to be found sooner and leads to lower dose requirements in some cases. The new PET/CT has motion-match technology that improves the quality of images in areas where people tend to move (such as lungs). The images are less blurry with this technology, giving physicians a clearer picture of the scan. Patients benefit from this new PET/CT scan design, because the bed is constructed to comfortably hold patients up to 500 pounds, and the extra room creates less fear of claustrophobia.

This innovative technology is available at Florida Hospital Flagler and Florida Hospital DeLand.

Cardiology Designed to treat patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation

(PAF), the Arctic Front® Cardiac CryoAblation Catheter system uses a coolant to correct irregular heartbeats. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rate that can cause poor blood flow. In atrial fibrillation, the electrical signals sent from the two upper chambers of the heart are out of sync with the electrical signals in the two lower chambers of the heart. An estimated 2.2

million Americans have PAF, and 25 percent will develop the condition at some point in their lives.

Arctic Front is a steerable, flexible plastic tube (catheter) with

a balloon at the top that expands when filled with coolant, which is delivered by a computerized control center.

Once inserted, the balloon atop the catheter is filled with

pressurized liquid coolant delivered from a tank in the CryoConsole. The liquid expands to a gas that causes the top to cool to an extremely low temperature. The balloon freezes and destroys the nearby tissue around the pulmonary vein, blocking the abnormal electrical activity that causes PAF.

Halifax Health is the first medical center in the Daytona area

to offer the Arctic Front Cardiac CryoAblation Catheter. The new technology means a safer, more effective treatment for patients with PAF.

Heart Procedures Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures offer

life-saving services to patients suffering from heart attacks. When a patient is suffering from a heart attack, minutes can mean the different between life and death. With PCI procedures available to residents in Daytona, families nearby can rest assured that they will be taken care of in an emergency. Both Florida Hospital DeLand and Cape Canaveral Hospital now offer these services.

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) helps deliver radiation

treatment to cancerous tumors more accurately than conventional radiation systems and provides a full-spectrum of treatment all in one machine. Tumors can be treated more accurately, because IGRT allows for images of the tumor to be taken right before treatment. Therefore, physicians can pinpoint where the tumor is and focus radiation in that area. Because
