PHYSICIANS' FYI
Medicine NOTE: Florida Statute
766.314(6)(b)2 states that any physician who has not satisfied the
annual Neurological Injury Compensation Association (NICA) assessment fee shall not renew any license to practice until such time as the judgment is satisfied in full.
To better ensure a smooth renewal process, resolve any judgments prior to your renewal.
Allopathic (MD) Florida allopathic (MD) licenses expire every Jan. 31. The
Department of Health (DOH) divides MDs into two groups. One group holds licenses that expire in even-numbered years, while the other group expires in odd-numbered years. All 40 continuing medical education (CME) hours (needed for second and subsequent renewals) must be American Medical Association (AMA) Physicians Recognition Award (PRA) Category 1 Credit™, except for Domestic Violence and Prevention of Medical Errors.
Up to five hours, per biennium, of CME credit may be fulfilled
by performing pro bono medical services for entities under the DOH Volunteer Health Care Provider Program, in an area of critical need and in Community and Migrant Health Care Centers.
First renewal: • One hour of HIV/AIDS • Two hours of Prevention of Medical Errors
Every renewal thereafter: • Two hours of Prevention of Medical Errors • 38 general CME hours
Every third renewal: • Two hours of Prevention of Medical Errors • Two hours of Domestic Violence • 36 general CME hours
Exemptions: Licensed physicians on active duty in the U.S. military are
exempt from all licensure renewal provisions. However, they are required to complete the Financial Responsibility form and Physician's Workforce Survey.
Osteopathic (DO) Florida osteopathic (DO) licenses expire on March 31 of even-
numbered years. All 40 CME hours must be AMA or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) approved.
Up to 10 hours, per biennium, of CME credit may be fulfilled
by performance of pre-approved pro bono medical services. Licensed osteopathic physicians who are on active duty (and for a period of six months after discharge from active duty) have the option of obtaining all 40 CME hours through home study, correspondence or online courses.
