Possible Solutions It was determined that positive design action needed to be taken to strengthen the spaces between buildings in order to create a series of memorable experiences for everyone shopping, working or living in Zone 1. More design advantage should be taken of the very unusual nature of this city centre which would not only start its life as the gateway to the Olympics but would always, as Peter Stewart put it, have the invaluable advantage of being raised on an artificial hill with limited points of entry not so very unlike a mediaeval fortress town that tourists pay good money to visit.


What would make Stratford City Centre more memorable? Recommendations generated round the table about the retail part of Zone 1 included: — should be thought of even from today as distinctive – in name, character, form and feeling; — making sure that the curved galleria, which links the three anchor stores and which would be largely covered and accessible largely in retail hours, would have a strong architectural quality of a very high order;


— making the principal East – West route, which would be largely open to the sky and accessible 24/7 by bikes as well as by pedestrians, become Stratford City’s architectural equivalent of Bond St. with specialised retailing to match


— making sure that each of the five junctions on the main East – West route is given a high level of architectural attention so that each of them will be distinct, recognisable and memorable;


— engineering a magnificent entry from the Eurostar station Southwards to the main pedestrian level of the shopping, similar in scale to the entry to Canary Wharf from Norman Foster’s tube station. This should be designed to feel like the natural continuation of a public route rather than just the entrance to a shopping centre;


— giving careful attention to the design of all vertical pedestrian links throughout the scheme;


Recommendations put forward about the South West area of offices, housing and hotels included: — creating a much stronger armature of streets with less irregularly shaped and more rationally sized urban blocks;
