Temporary use Carmody Groarke’s temporary restaurant provided a housewarming party for the Westfield site


From 16 June 2010, for a three-week period, just 2,000 guests visited Carmody Groarke’s striking pop-up pavilion as it hosted Studio East Dining by Bistrotheque.


A fast build with a life span of just three weeks, the primary structure, weighing 70 tonnes, was constructed from hired materials borrowed from the existing construction site, including 2,000 scaffold boards, 3,500 scaffold poles, and reclaimed timber, used to create the walls and floors of the 800m2

dining space. The cladding material that encased the roof was a semi-translucent membrane, using industrial-grade heat-retractable polyethylene, which is 100 per cent recycled after use; as with the other materials, all was returned to the site afterwards and recycled without any waste. By night, the whole structure would glow, forming shadows and silhouettes of the events held within, creating a compelling jewel on London’s skyline at sunset.


The pattern of the rooms was reinforced in the floor, creating a herringbone effect that defined the character of the individual spaces.
