on the move ONE of West Malling’s best- known family firms, Bal- docks outdoor shop, has moved from its landmark site at the corner of Swan Street and High Street. But the business, which


was established in 1878, will remain in the town centre, as owner Tim Baldock is mov- ing the stock to his nearby ski shop Moor andMountain.He is retaining the old premises which he hopes to lease for retail. Mr Baldock said he was saddened by the move, but had decided to consolidate the business to make it more manageable as he nears re- tirement. He thanked staff and cus- tomers for their support and promised the same high level of service would continue.

Park volunteers swing into action FRIENDS of Nevill Park, Snodland, worked wonders over a week- end when they painted andwood-stained all the old equipment in the play area ready for new items to be installed. Working with the town council, the group has raised more than £13,000 and a contractor has started to install the new pieces. The main item is a £9,000 zip wire, which was one of the items on chil- dren’s wish list. Other new items include balance logs, a springer and a picnic table. Travelling site inquiry hitch A PUBLIC hearing into whether land off Castle Way, Leybourne, can be used as winter quarters for travelling showmen, was ad- journed because of legal issues. The inquiry at the Civic Suite, KingsHill, was attended by around


30 residents, but is now expected to go ahead on September 11. An appeal had been lodged by Sheldon Whittle after planning permission was refused by Tonbridge andMalling Council. The inspector considered that arguments presented by both sides should take into account changes in planning rules since the bor- ough made its decision.
