he current economic climate presents a challenge for us all regardless of sector or business type. Some businesses are failing to survive whilst others are thriving, despite the recession. Why is this so?


What are the lessons to be learned from the organisations that are successful? These were some of the questions the team at Next Level Impact asked when compiling and distilling the Top Five Tips.


In this series of articles, written exclusively for Business First, we have shared the first four tips so far:


1. Encourage leadership at all levels within your organisation.


2. Adopt a zero‑based budgeting approach. 3. Apply the Pareto Principle to customer relationship management.


4. Manage change and improve processes proactively.


The fifth tip is this: Unleash the potential of your people and watch


your organisation flourish Whilst this is a ʻbusiness no brainerʼ, many organisations fail to maximize the potential of their people and this causes frustration, alienation and poor morale.


I remember quite clearly my first role as a quality co‑ordinator for a manufacturing group after graduating from University and am happy to share one of my personal experiences there.


I worked hard in the role, putting in additional time and effort outside normal


office hours to develop improvements to the way the organisation managed its overall quality system.


I was so convinced that changes were required to save the company thousands of pounds each year that I eventually approached our general manager and outlined my thoughts. His response: “Son ‑ your job here is to maintain systems, not to change systems.” Needless to say, the organisation wallowed in its traditional approaches and eventually collapsed under the pressures for the need to change, innovate, survive and grow.


So what is the lesson to be learned? Do not stifle creativity, suggestions and innovation from your people ‒ encourage and manage their ideas for performance improvement. One of the ways to unleash the potential of staff is to pro‑actively encourage them to identify Improvement Projects and to take ownership for driving change and performance improvement. You might want to focus on engaging your people in improvement projects relating to the following areas as a start: 1. Reducing costs or increasing sales. 2. Improving customer satisfaction. 3. Expanding the range of services or products that you offer. 4. Do things more efficiently. 5. Sharing knowledge and expanding peopleʼs roles and capabilities.
