3. Wi-Fi Finder As a starving, broke student, you should use every possibility of getting free Wi-Fi. You live off of free stuff! The (free) Wi-Fi Finder app by JiWire is a great app to have handy while on the move, to get to know the free Wi-Fi hotspots in your vicinity. If you’re not within direct range of a Wi-Fi signal, there is no way of knowing whether you are within a few yards or miles of the nearest free hotspot, unless you have the Wi-Fi Finder app. The free app has an online and offline directory of over 50,000 different hotspot locations in 144 different countries. Of course, the app becomes really useful when you don’t already have a WiFi connection. The offline feature of the app lets you search for all known Wi-Fi spots by towns or zip codes all over the world. This is a free add-on that has to be installed after the app has been downloaded.

4. Opera Mini Web browsing is in your blood, but it’s no good if it can’t save you money and time. Opera Mini is a free app that makes for a super fast browsing experience that is as good as desktop browsing on your mobile device. What allows Opera Mini to do this is the compression that takes place on their servers before the webpages you visit land on your device – by up to 90 percent. This results in much faster browsing, data savings if you are on a tiered plan and money savings if you are roaming.

Plus, with Opera Mini, you can sync all your bookmarks and passwords across devices, keep tabs on how much data you are saving per session and also browse with multiple tabs. Opera Mini is available for most mobile devices and tablets.

your friends. (Ask them to download it too). It’s a messaging app (£0.69) that lets you message others on WhatsApp as much as you want – if you are heavy texter, this is the app for you.

The texting interface is similar to what you see with iOS, plus it lets you include photos, audio notes and videos within your conversations. WhatsApp also lets you change your background, notifies you when a text has been viewed by the recipient and lets you send your GPS location on an interactive map. This app is a must-have to stay in touch with your buddies!
