NEWS Plan for Istanbul financial centre approved
The TurkishMinister for Environment and Urbanism, Erdogan Bayraktar, has announced approval of the Gensler designedmasterplan for a newfinancial district in Turkey – Istanbul FinancialCentre. The new69 hectare site is strategically located inAtaseHir in Istanbul, on the Eastern side of the Bosphorus andwill provide considerable expansion in terms of Turkey’s economic capabilities. Gensler’s planning teams in London and LosAngeles created a unique vision for the client, Emlak Konut,
based on Turkey’s historical powerhouse, Topkapi Palace.Workingwith local architects and planners, OzguvenArchitecture andConstruction, and Imar Planning and ProjectConsulting Inc. Ltd; the concept incorporates bold references to themedieval andwalled communities of old Istanbul, using colonnaded courtyards and open spaces, aswell as a hierarchy of gate systems to provide a subtle yet secure architectural landscapewhereby, security is paramount but a sense of community prevails.
‘Palace on pillars’ installation
Tomark the location of the historicAldgate –where Chaucer lived from1374 – 1386, an intricate timber ‘palace on pillars’will be constructed by the WorshipfulCompany ofCharteredArchitects as its contribution to theOlympic celebrations. The installation,which forms part of the London Festival of Architecture (23 June – 8 July), has nowsecured temporary planning permission andwill remain in place during theOlympics and Paralympics. Created by the young, award-winning architects,
StudioWeave, andmanaged byM3Consulting, the constructionwill alsomark the start ofHigh Street 2012, the direct route fromtheCity of London to the Olympic Park at Stratford. TheNewAldgate is supported by theCity PropertyAdvisory Team(CPAT) and eight otherWorshipful liveryCompanies andwill be built fromsustainable British Larch supplied by BSWTimber and is sponsored by 4CHotelGroup. Chief executive of the Land Trust, Euan Hall, explains why: “Michael displayed a strong empathy with both the site and the Trust’s ambitions. The design really excited us and the creative consortia Michael assembled brought a compelling and thought-provoking ideology to the table. His ability to truly consider the built and open environments really impressed us and as such he’s a worthy winner of the competition.”

From1374 to 1386Chaucer lived in the rooms above theAldgate.Our design is inspired by the two dreampoemswritten byChaucerwhile resident in the rooms above the gate. ‘TheHouse of Fame’ and ‘The Parliament of Fowls’ both include images of fantastic dream-like temples of impossiblematerials and scale, elevated on precarious, precious structures above vast, bizarre landscapes conceivable as analogies for theCity.

MICHELETTI AWARDWIN ZHA’s RiversideMuseumin Glasgowhas been named themost innovative museumin the fields of technology, labour and social history by the EuropeanMuseum Academy. Riverside competed against museums in 12 other European countries towin the 17th annualMicheletti Award. The judges noted the
careful planning of the museumand inclusion of visitors and volunteers at every stage of the development, concluding that: “Themuseumhas put its budget and its larger workforce to excellent use, it is completely publically orientated and flexible.”
CURTAIN LIFTS ON
CLAPHAMCINEMA The £15million restoration and partial conversion of the art deco-fronted former Granada Cinema at 58 St John’s Hill in Clapham, South London, has completed. Assael designed the scheme for Henley Homes,which transforms the disused, Grade II listed, 1930s building into 59 apartments, commercial space and an auditorium, while preserving its original spectacular façade and opulent neo classical- style interior.
RIBA PRESIDENCY Stephen Hodder has been confirmed as the next president of the RIBA. He will become president elect on 1st September 2012 and will take over the two-year elected presidency from Angela Brady. Hodder is director of Hodder + Partners, and is currently RIBA vice president formembership and a design reviewpanel member for both CABE and PlacesMatter!
