June 2012 I recently took the
opportunity to explore the work of Article 25 at an exhibition, hosted by Scott Brownrigg. Set up six years ago by British architect
Maxwell Hutchinson following his experience of the 2004 Indian Ocean Boxing Day Tsunami, the charity is named after the 25th Article of the Declaration of Human Rights that states adequate shelter is a fundamental right. The charity pools resources within the
built environment sector and directs them to disaster-hit zones. Through its work it aims to show what good design is capable of achieving, and one of its most recent projects in Pakistan certainly does this. Following the devastating 7.6 magnitude

earthquake that hit the region in 2006, Article25 has worked not to simply re-build, but to build back better – erecting structures capable of withstanding future quakes. The worry is; such feats made by our
industry may pass under the radar if not well promoted. Thankfully Article 25 and its work, despite being in its relative infancy, is already well recognised; but this is no accident – it is thanks to innovative fundraising events like ‘10 x 10 London’ which sees big names come together to draw their interpretation of a square of the city. Last year’s event raised £60,000 for the charity and also helped to engage the public with the potential that architecture has to add value to all of our lives. For those within the profession, that
