Shows giveyoung stars their chance to shine

ABRAND new competition at this year’s Beef Expo event saw teams of three youngsters show different beef breeds and compete for the chance of win- ning atrip to the Royal Winter

Stars Challenge,representing the Herefordbreed, wasmade up of Fiona Woollatt, aged 20, from St Albans, Hertfordshire; James Ludgate,aged 19, from Thame in Oxfordshire, and the youngest member Hannah Braithwaite, aged 18, from Bridgnorth in Shropshire. Each team had to bring twoanimals


to the National Beef Association show at Malvern and demonstratetheir preparation and handling skills,aswell as stockjudging, knowledge of the industry and understanding of promo- tion and marketing. The HerefordCattle Society also had


success in winning the Best Breed Stand forthe second time in four years. The judge wasexecutive chairman of


British Livestock Genetics,Henry Lewis,who said the Herefordstand had “embraced the event’stheme of ‘improving your bottom line’ through- out their display. Each pen of cattle and promotional material told astory of howlivestock farmers could improve their financial returns.” Herefordbreeder William Haire,


aged 36, wasselected as runner-up in the prestigious Farmers Guardian Beef Stockman of the Future. William waspresented with the


awardinfront of nearly 400 members of the livestock industry at the Beef Expo dinner. William is apartner in afarmbusi-


ness based near Crumlin, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and is afirm believerinsticking to financial goals, rather than following fashions in breed- ing and sells most of his livestock pri- vately. William’supland farmsupports a

took the prizefor the group of three.
