couple slept in acaravan towedbythe JCB. He said:“Wehavebeen overwhelmed


by all the support and encouragement we’vehad along the wayand want to thank everyone fortheir patience. “The main aim has been to raise


awareness of the problems facing rural communities in Wales –there’saper- ception everyone living in the country- side is rich butpoverty,declining village life and isolation arereal issues which aregetting worse.”


Archbishop Barry said: “This is an


excellent waytoraise awareness of the problems in rural areas and the invalu- able work of the charities.


“Our clergy serving in rural parishes


see at first hand, and on adailybasis, the hardship and suffering of those communities and as achurch we want to help and support them as much as we can.”


Erys Hughes,regional officer of the


RABI, whohas followedRichardfor much of the trip,said: “For the RABI, it’snot about raising money as much as raising awareness thatweare hereto help.


“Farmers areavery proud lot and


don’t want to admit they arestruggling –manyare not evenaware of the help we can give them. But the past 11 years have been very difficult forthem, what with foot-and-mouth disease,floods, swine flu, the collapse of the dairy industry and bovine TB and we have seen ahuge increase in demand for help.”

Organic sector sells itself


THE Welsh Government and Organic Centre Wales teamed up to organise afarmers’ market at the Welsh Government offices in Aberystwyth to mark Europe Day in May. The market is funded by the Better Organic Business Links (BOBL) project which provides opportunities, information and training for businesses in the Welsh organic sector to help them deliver better profitability, sustainability and exemplary environmental performance. The Welsh Government has awarded £800,000 of funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales for atwo-year project which delivered amajor marketing campaign to promote direct sales through farmers’ markets, farm shops, box schemes and internet sales via www.fork2fork.org.uk.
