MORE MOUNTAIN SPLENDOR AS WE COWBOY ON UP TO MONTANA...

T

here’s no holds barred at the Bar W on spectacular Spencer Lake near Whitefi sh, Montana. If you can’t coax out your inner cowboy in Montana, you just oughta hang up your dang spurs. You’re also very near Glacier National Park and the Going

to the Sun Road. Whitefi sh (named by Frommer’s Budget Travel as one

of their top ten cool towns) is the quintessential mountain town—quaint, charming, friendly and scenic, but your Western riding adventure awaits on 3,000 acres of Bar W land. Families, singles and groups are all welcome; there’s plenty of room for everyone, from the huge lodge to the cabin suites, barn, stables, play meadow and lakeside gazebo. Of course, there’s plenty of space to ride, as well as horse-

manship clinics, barrel racing, pole bending, roping, team penning and sorting cat le. T e Bar W crew defi nes their meals as down-home Mon-

tana style, served in portions to match guests’ mountain- fueled appetites. Not riding? Shoot arrows, pool or clay pigeons, toss horse-

shoes (hopefully some that aren’t being worn), mountain bike, swim, play volleyball or badminton, and in winter all of the traditional cold-weather activities are available on the ranch or

nearby. In any season you’re likely to encounter wildlife from mule deer to bears or mountain lions. Twice a year—spring and fall—

the Bar W hosts “Cowboying on the Great Divide,” which is all about horses, cat le, great scenic country and those who agree with Will Rogers that “T e outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.” T is cat le drive adventure incorporates all of the aspects of an old-fashioned cat le roundup, without all the waiting around and less fun aspects that cowboys of old had to endure. You’ll be matched with a suitable horse, go through some

lessons on working with cat le, and then head out to the Blackfoot reservation and base camp. It’s a four-day adven- ture, during which you will gather cat le, drive them back to corrals, sort mothers and calves, brand, inoculate and “doctor” the young males. (Ouch!) T is is a “real deal” experience with diff erent herds (even

some bucking horses) and some steep mountainous terrain. Your but may howl for mercy at the end of the four days, but you will never forget the experience. Sissies need not apply.
