Tavistock Ladies Luncheon Club

PUSHING a lettuce leaf round a plate is what one associates with ‘ladies who lunch’. This could not be further from the truth for members of Tavistock Ladies Luncheon Club! Excellent three course lunches followed by interesting talks from guest speakers is the aim of the Club and, every month, this is what members enjoy. Over 60 years ago two Tavistock ladies

regularly attended the annual Foyles Literary Luncheon Club at the Dorchester Hotel in London. They heard a wide variety of interesting talks, enjoyed good food and met many celebrities of the day. It was due to these visits that the idea was born to start such a Club in Tavistock. An advert was placed in the local press and there was an excellent response. Over a period of time numbers grew and the Club moved to the Bedford Hotel where, for over 50 years, this is where members meet every last Thursday in every month. Though good food and service is very important, after-lunch speakers are an integral part of the meeting. Over the years there has been an amazing variety of talks given by both local and national speakers - Walking the Silk Road, Serving the Queen Mother, Rowing the Atlantic, the History of Knickers, Swimming with Dolphins, Round the World on a Bike, the History of Fans, the Life of a Private Investigator, How to Wear a Hat. From farming and aromatherapy to Bonzai trees

The 2012 programme started with talks on the work done for the street children in India, conservation work at the National Trust and a Life of a Criminal Solicitor. Travel, life as paramedic, Covent Garden Ladies (Emma Hamilton, Nell Gywnn, Lily Langtree to name but a few!) are just some of the talks for 2012 ending in

Excellent food, inspiring talks and, equally importantly, good company have always been the aim of Tavistock Ladies Luncheon Club.
