Brammo’s electric motorcycle boasts 100-mile range By Heather Clancy

I don’t know which factoid would-be
owners of the new Brammo Empulse electric motorcycle will appreciate more: the bike’s 100-mile range on one battery charge or its posted top speed of 100 miles per hour.
Craig Bramsher, CEO of Brammo, said the company consulted motorcycle riders and dealers extensively during the design of the Empulse and Empulse R. Their feedback convinced Brammo to add a six-speed transmission (ala traditional performance bikes from Ducati or BMW that run on gas) and seating for two, he said.
Other features that highlight the
new Empulse include J1772 Level 2 charging technology, which allows the motorcycle to take better advantage of existing charging infrastructure and to get about 80 percent of the charge back into the battery after two hours. The motorcycle uses a water-cooled AC motor and regenerative braking, and it runs off a lithium-cobalt battery pack.
There is one particular way in which Empulse does not emulate traditional gas-powered motorcycles: although the bike has a distinctive sound, it
is
quieter than the average bike, which
means riders can
better hear what is around them. “You get a sense back,” Bramsher said.
The Empulse carries a sticker price of $16,995, while the Empulse R model has a pricetag of $18,995.
The company has arranged for dealer financing in conjunction with Sheffield Financial.
Currently, Brammo uses dealerships in the top 80 metropolitan areas in the United States with a particular focus on San Francisco and Los Angeles, in Florida and a couple of other east coast cities, Bramsher said. The company recently hired a national sales director to extend its dealer network, he said.
