Two Reading businessmen have won top honours at the Institute of Directors’ London and the South East Director of the Year Awards


Alastair Storey, Chief Executive of WSH, was joint winner of the Director of the Year of a business with a turnover of more than £100m, while Chris Bartlett, Managing Director of GCS Recruitment Specialists, won in the Director of the Year of a company with a turnover of £25m to £99.99m category.

New Business Director of the Year Sonja Wood – Director for Ecosan Services, Ashford, Kent.


EcoSan offers eco-friendly washroom solutions to businesses in every sector. It was the first southern-based business to offer sanitary, nappy and incontinence recycling and recently recorded another first by recycling chewing gum.


International Director of the Year -up to £24.99m turnover


Martin Howe – chief executive officer – Global Immersion, Haywards Heath, West Sussex.


Global Immersion resulted from a 2007 management buyout of a company specialising in flight simulator display technologies. With offices in Haywards Heath and the USA, its expertise in building digital planetariums and 3D and 4D cinema experiences has seen it win contracts to build high performance theatres for educational and entertainment use at public attractions and theme parks around the world.


International Director of the Year - over £25m turnover


Jarl Severn – managing director – Owen Mumford, Woodstock, Oxfordshire.


Owen Mumford is a medical equipment manufacturer which was founded 60 years ago. With 600 full time staff and 100 part time and contractors, it has factories in Woodstock and Chipping Norton and sales offices in the United States, Germany and France. It opened its fourth overseas office in China in January this year.


WSH owns some of the UK’s most successful catering and hospitality brands – BaxterStorey, benugo, Holroyd Howe, Caterlink and Portico. BaxterStorey, the largest company in the WSH stable, serves lunch to nearly a million of the UK’s workforce every day across business and industry with clients including IPC Media, Barclays and Goldman Sachs. All produce is sourced close to the client’s site and prepared fresh on site by BaxterStorey’s team of talented chefs.


GCS Recruitment is a specialist recruitment consultancy representing permanent and contract staff, covering the technology, digital media, engineering, financial, accountancy and sales sectors.


Hosted by Channel 5 newsreader Emma Crosby and featuring keynote speaker Gyles Brandreth, the


glittering gala awards dinner took place in the Grand Ballroom at the Landmark Hotel in Marylebone on March 29.


The winners were judged the best of their peers from among more than 100 entries drawn up for the final selection process.


Rodger Broad, director for the IoD in the South East, said: “These annual awards recognise the hard work, inspiration and management skills of business leaders in a wide variety of sectors.


“The South East is the powerhouse of the UK economy and the efforts of directors such as our finalists and winners, along with many, many others around the region, will help drive the UK’s economic recovery.

All the winners now go forward to the UK Director of the Year Awards finals in October.
