What a month, first it was the Maine Boatbuilder’s Show in Portland the middle of March. Manning two booths, Maine Coastal News and Maine Built Boats, was a challenge. Fortunately, they were right next to each other. I always enjoy this show because it signals the end of winter, and I see a lot of people I do not see any other time. It is also fun going out to eat at different places. We were at Becky’s one night, Ri Ra’s the next and then for St. Patrick’s Day we ate at Benkay’s.
Maine Coastal News is dedicated to covering the waterfront of State of Maine. It covers commercial fishing, yachting (power and sail), boat yard and waterfront news and maritime history. In the end I was indebted to my wife for manning the MCN booth and that meant a run the following weekend to doll show in Massachusetts. One can get a lot of reading done at these shows. Then we made our way up Route One stopping at a number of antique stores. There was a lot of interesting items, but I only bought a cod fish box from a Bangor company at a shop in Wells. In a matter of two weeks the poor GMC had done nearly 3,000 miles.
Then there was the launching of DELUSIONAL, which I was not going to miss.

The next weekend was MMTA’s Maine’s Boating Expo at the former Naval Air Station, Brunswick. What a great facility, 36,000 square feet, but MMTA and the building managers had a number of obstacles to overcome. MMTA did not give up and did a great job making this happen. Susan Swanton, the head of MMTA, was pleasantly surprised when she sold out her exhibitor space. She was also surprised by how everyone helped during set up and take down. The big unknown was how many people would come and would they be
buyers. Friday was a little chilly and there was not a big turnout. Those that did come seemed to be looking at the boats. Saturday was warmer and a lot more people showed up. Sunday was warm again and the turnout was pretty good. The bottom-line was that a number of boats and other things were sold. I manned the Maine Built Boats’ booth and we had a person come up and ask about rebuilding the deck of a 46-foot wooden ketch. They had already done some searching and I gave them a few more names to explore. That alone made it worth it, and we also got a new member. Exhibitors were pleased and everyone I talked with said they would be back. MMTA hopes that they can get the same site next year and are already talking with thoses that manage the facility about that. They would also like to expand outside, which could make for a much bigger and better show.
As the weather continues to warm, I am getting anxious about getting down on SATURN. She had an uneventful winter and now I need to get some big projects done. The biggest of course, is getting her engines running, but there is always more chipping, grinding and painting to do. Funds are always a big hurdle and I need to get better at producing newsletters on a periodic basis to help raise the needed money. The same for my maritime library, which has been progressing slower than I would like. Lots of material has been inputted and it looks like we are getting closer to having a website up where one can view this material. What has been done is good, but it is only a very, very small aspect of the big picture. I need more hours in a day!

Maine Maritime Museum’s latest exhibit presents a vision of
the history of
Maine’s Gateway City as portrayed by the ships that have transited Portland Head to clear Spring Point Ledge, a series of vessels as diverse as the different eras they represent; vessels that have brought hope, grief, sustenance, prosperity, disappointment, and a good day’s work to its people.

Under new ownership, this summer’s revamped Newport Charter Yacht Show (NCYS) guarantees charter boat owners, brokers, agents and boating enthusiasts a convenient one-stop location for presenting and exploring the endless possibilities of luxury chartering. The four-day event is the only one of its kind in the U.S. and while catering primarily to the charter trade, it also allows discriminating consumers (attending with brokers) to learn more about dream vacations on one of the many world-class yachts (ranging from 50 to 200 feet) that will be present. Directly preceding the America’s Cup World Series in Newport, the NCYS will also showcase ancillary goods and services aimed at captains and crew and host a series of industry-focused seminars on destination cruising, maritime law and new technology.
