May 2012 MAINE COASTAL NEWS Page 11. Commercial Fishing News NEWSFROM THE DOWNEAST LOBSTERMAN ASSOCIATION From the Director –
Spring is here and so is the boating season! We have all been very busy getting ready for the upcoming season. I’ve seen boats traveling down the road behind a newly polished “rig” to their new destination, whether it is to be refurbished for a new owner or heading to the waterfront to start a new fishing season.
Downeast Lobstermen’s Association has been busy with the Maine Fishermen’s Forum, the Canadian/US Town Meeting that was held in Portland, the LAC Sub-Commit- tee, and much more. We have been working with Marty Hamblen and the International Special Risks Insurance Group. You should receive a letter in the mail that tells a little more about the insurance program that has been added to our membership benefits. This should be a big help if you are looking at putting insurance on your existing boat or if you are having a new boat built. This also gives you a choice with your D.E.L.A. mem- bership, as we also offer more than one insur- ance company that is working with us. Please take the time to check them all out. They are all very helpful and a great group of people to work with.
At this present time, there are meetings that are hosted by Penobscot East Resource Center and Sea Grant. The meeting cards were mailed to everyone that holds a Maine lobster license. The sponsors supporting the meet- ings also include D.E.L.A., M.L.A., the D.M.R. and Gulf of Maine Lobster Founda-
tion. We need your input on your feelings about the limited entry program that involves lobster licenses and the current waiting list. D.E.L.A. has been very involved over the past few years, going to the Maine legis- lative hearings and meetings that support a needed change of our waiting list. These rules have been “out dated” for concerns of today—2012.
At this point in time, we have fathers, sons and daughters that continue to have a need to help each other on the water as well as with the family business. In many cases, the young person leaves the state to either go to college or take a job. We also know of a father with sons in the lobster industry that he let his license expire years ago to take a job on land. I also had a lobster license to help my father when he had health problems in the early ‘90’s. I have no agenda for myself on this subject. My father passed away in No- vember of 2011 and his license will go back into the pool. My reason of concern is for people that may still have an opportunity to make a difference for their families. I let my license expire, also thinking that it would be available in the future if I ever wanted to obtain it again. There are many, many differ- ent circumstances on this subject that badly need to be addressed by all of us. Please, if you have circumstances of this nature, let us all know what your concerns are. We continue to have families that need to take a look at the licensing structure if they want the next generation to continue on with

our traditional lifestyle of lobstering in the State of Maine. This is one of the major industries that we are known for. When you think of Maine, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Most people tell me that they want to go to the coast to see the lobster boats and eat a Maine lobster.
If we don’t offer our input, the young people will move out of the state or even the county to take better jobs elsewhere. We can possibly open up the options for our marine industry also, such as our Maine boat build- ers, engine companies, marine supply stores and so on. Right now, we are pretty much “dead in the water without a paddle.” We had a very good meeting in Ellsworth at Pat’s Pizza on April 12th. The attendance was great and so was the food. We took up subjects such as the licensing concerns that are coming up, as well as many subjects that will be in the next month’s minutes. We of- fered condolences to the family of David
Taylor of Boothbay, who passed away after a short illness. David was a faithful boat race veteran who raced the F/V Andrea/Donna in it’s hey day. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Mike and I went to Boothbay to participate with the lobster boat procession that was held in his honor. The weather turned out to be beautiful for this occasion. Thank you Clive and Sue for taking us along with you. A reception followed at Robinson’s Wharf in Dave’s honor. The food was wonderful and there was plenty of it. The family released balloons in Dave’s buoy colors at the end of the day. D.E.L.A. welcomes a new member – L. S. Robinson Co. of Southwest Harbor! They have joined our insurance crew, so give them a call if you’re shopping for insurance. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thurs- day, May 10th at 6:00 p.m. at the Dockside
