Dinner with Former Gov. Whitman The League of Women Voters of New Jersey Education Fund will host an evening of cocktails and dinner with members, sup- porters, state leaders, and former Governor Christine Whitman on Wednesday, May 16, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Imperia, 1714 Easton Ave., Somerset. Gov. Whitman will be discussing Americans Elect, the first nonpartisan presidential nomination that uses the internet to open up the political process and give every single voter - Democrat, Republican, or independent - the power to nominate a presidential ticket in 2012.

Regarding Americans Elect, Governor Whitman said, “While most Americans hold centrist views, the small percentage of people on the fringes of both par- ties vote in the primaries and deter- mine our options for president. The

nominating system as it stands now is compromising our ability to gov- ern, and therefore our effectiveness as a nation. That’s why I’ve joined the board of Americans Elect, a nonpartisan nonprofit that’s hold- ing the first ever national online primary this year. Any registered voter can participate, and whoever the American people choose for president through Americans Elect will be on the ballot nationwide, right next to President Obama and the Republican nominee.” Tickets are $95 each ($50 of each ticket is tax-deductible) and include dinner and an open bar. All proceeds benefit the League of Women Voters of New Jersey Education Fund, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization committed to educating and serving New Jer- sey voters. RSVP to jburns@lwvnj. org by Wednesday, May 9.

New Recycling Program Reducing

Municipal Waste

By Mayor Tom Auriemma The Recycling MyPublicRe- wards program now in place is making an impact. For the months of February and March, our town- ship residents through the use of the new recycling containers have reduced municipal waste by 77 tons and increased recyclables by 53 tons, as compared to the same two months last year.

Adopt Placido–Placido is a 7-year-old, extremely overweight (16 pounds) Chihuahua whose owner passed away. In his former life the little Chi

lived with cats and another small dog. Animal Alliance thinks that he will be very adaptable and fit right into his new home. Placido likes to be close to his foster mother and is eager to be held. He is a good size - not too small to be fragile and small enough to be taken everywhere. Go to www.animalallian- cenj.org and fill out an application.

Raritan Valley Disposal (RVD) has partnered with Republic Ser- vices Inc. to reward you for your recycling efforts through the My- PublicRewards program. You will earn points based on how much residents recycle, and will then be able to redeem these points for coupons and merchandise. Readington Township residents will use a “Self Reporting” model for the MyPublicRewards program. The program was to begin in late February, but was rescheduled to April 23. A recent mailer provides instructions on how to register for the program. Due to the delay, all residents that participate in the Re- cycling program will receive 450 points just for registering, but you must register by May 31. If you have any questions, call the RVD Customer Service Department at 908-730-7800.
