Estrogen & Its Contribution to Healthy Aging
by Zbigniew “Tony” Chmielewski, M.D., AFAARM and Eleni Rayner
M
ay is women’s health month and the center of being a woman is estrogen. Literally, estrogen is the hor- mone solely responsible for female characteristics.
That is not to say that the male body does not emit estrogen, but the amount is nominal and undefined by its purpose. In the female body, naturally produced estrogen permeates a kaleidascope of functions, by purpose and anscillary effects. A normal production of estrogen in a woman contributes to reg- ulating menstrual cycles, aesthetically looking like a woman and stable mental health – to mention a few. Dozens of other effects result from estrogen’s existence in the body essential to aging healthily. Healthy levels of estrogen contribute to multiple functions
in the body such as: • Accelerate metabolism • Stimulate endometrial growth • Increase vaginal lubrication • Maintenance of vessel and skin • Increase HDL • Decrease LDL • Salt (sodium) and water retention • Stability on moods
Obviously, low levels of estrogen would decrease the functions mentioned above. As women leave the childbearing years the body’s level of estrogen begins to decrease. When the hormone levels begin to lessen the body begins to show, more obviously, the aging process. For example, estrogen assists in salt and water retention and as the estrogen levels drop so does the salt and water in the body, which leads to wrinkles. There are so many ways to replenish the estrogen in the body and help alleviate the aging process.

When the body naturally pro- duces estrogen in a non-pregnant
female it is produced in three major forms, estrone (E1), estra- diol (E2), and estriol (E3). E3 is the most abundantly pro- duced being at 60% - to 80% then E2 at 10% - 30% and then E1 10% to 20%. Although E3 is the most plentiful it is the weakest. E2 is actually the strongest being approximately eighty times stronger than E3. By replenishing the estrogen levels as they begin reduc- ing, the aging process is shielded from its natural progression. One method of administering estrogen is a topical cream. Topical estrogen creams use the strengths of the the different forms of estrogen to its advantage. Topicals that are propor- tioned correctly should be about 80% E3 and 1-2% E2. E2 can be an aggitant in the body but the E3 actually works to minimize the aggitating factor. There are many options to replenish estrogen through the aging process. Cream is usually the most accessible, econom- ical and convenient application. Keeping estrogen at a healthy level is essential as women age. Think about the changes your body is encountering and what a difference estrogen might make. Monitoring estrogen is as simple as a blood test. If the levels are off consult a physican who special- izes in hormones to determine the regimen for you.
