urniture packages are a one-stop shop for everything required to set up home.
For little more than £3,000 in
countries like Turkey you can get MDF built /Ikea style basics which will do the job (for a while) but like everything, you get what you pay for.
Reputable companies can offer advice on compiling an inventory for a rental property and know local safety laws for fi re-retardant fabrics and furniture.
Some will provide an aftersales service for faulty electrical goods and be able to match and replace broken crockery quickly - an important consideration for owners several hundred miles away IKEA (
www.ikea.com) has 215 stores throughout Europe, many offering furniture packages.
In Mallorca a package for a two-bedroom apartment starts from €6,000 (£5,011), an option that developers Taylor Wimpey (
www.taylorwimpeyspain.com) say is popular with their budget-conscious buyers. “I would say 99 per cent of our buyers at El Puerto in eastern Mallorca use a furniture package either from IKEA or a slightly more expensive one from a local store,” says Caroline Ellis of Taylor Wimpey. “They like to avoid doing the shopping themselves.”
A furniture package can also offer bulk-buy discounts providing considerable savings.
“Our average cost for furnishing a two- bedroom apartment is £7,500 although you can pay anything from £4,500 to
£60,000 depending on your choices,” comments Frayling.
“We provide discounts of between 20 and 30 per cent. Clients choose from our ranges or can add in individual items they fi nd elsewhere. We arrange shipping, take delivery and dress their home for them.” Frayling has run Furnish Your Abode in Lagos on the Algarve for eight years and has showrooms there and in Stoke-on-Trent. “You can walk into our showroom or look on-line and within an hour go through the catalogues with your dedicated account manager selecting colours and styles,” comments Frayling.
“It saves time, hassle and money.” The further your home is from the UK the more potential problems there can be in arranging a fi t-out.
In the Caribbean import taxes can add up to 70 per cent to the cost of your purchases and are often accompanied by long delays getting goods through customs.
At Nonsuch Bay, (
www.nonsuchbayresort. com) a sailing resort in Antigua in the Eastern Caribbean where new apartments start from $350,000 (£219k), 46 of the 51 buyers have chosen to use the resort furniture package.
Prices for a two-bedroom apartment with all white goods are $50,800 (£35k). There are two main reasons for its popularity, says developer Cameron Fraser. “The government has granted a development concession on import duty for goods bought through the resort,” states Fraser. “It’s this fi nancial saving along with the diffi culties of importing in the Caribbean, organising customs clearance and transportation that make it an attractive option.”
