outlet on Red Sea shipping lanes and handle most of the Kingdom's sea trade. Planners envisaged a city with housing and lifestyle facilities and an urban
population they expected to exceed 100,000 by the year 2020. In fact, August 2010 estimates of the population in that year were over 200,000.
Yanbu Industrial City is being additionally transformed into a tourist destination. Along with many historical sites, it also boasts beautiful coral reefs great for diving and fishing on its long Red Sea coast. The Royal Commission
for Jubail and Yanbu began implementing new projects in Yanbu at the end of 2010, including a seafront project and infrastructure upgrades aimed at making Yanbu a major tourist attraction. The seafront project is spread over an area of nine kilometres along King Abdul Aziz Road, where some 22,000 trees and 200,000 flowers were planted in the area. The devel- opment is expected to attract 500,000 tourists every year to its recreational centres, resorts, marine life and cultural projects. Yanbu is well-placed to cater for both water sports and sun seekers. Hotels include the Radisson Blu Hotel Yanbu, located on the beach and the Mvenpick located on Al Mahaar Island. The Radisson Blu Hotel can be found 15 minutes from the industrial and commercial district and can host business meetings or corporate events.

The hotel features two meeting rooms for up to 80 delegates each equipped with high-tech audio-visual equipment. Offer- ing views of the Red Sea, the hotel's Waha Garden Terrace is aimed at attracting banquet and business gatherings. The Mvenpick is built on its own private island and offers unobstructed views of the Red
Sea from all of its 201 rooms, suites, villas and apartments, a dramatic zero-edge infin- ity pool, a private marina with diving and snorkelling, as well as a health club and spa. The hotels also boast conference rooms equipped with audio-visual technology and spacious banquet halls for several hundred guests.
Although Yanbu is clearly designed for both business and industry, there is a great deal of sports activities avail- able nearby, such as Red Sea diving, deep-sea fishing and snorkelling, excellent restaurants and busy cafs.
