Reworking Through The Recession It’s fair to say retail confidence is not at its highest. In general,

consumer spending has dropped sharply across the board with most sectors reporting disappointing figures. So why, in such an economic climate, would you launch a new retail project? Why indeed; and yet this is precisely what appliance manufacturer Indesit have done within the grounds of their production site in Yate. With electrical retailers particularly feeling the pinch, store

manager Ian Gilson is clear on the objectives of this venture and confi- dent that it is the correct strategic decision. “The main aim of the Factory Graded Store”, he says, “is to supply local traders with a new “toolkit for success” in the form of graded products to ensure they maximise their footfall.” Similarly, there is an aim to facilitate landlords with quality appliances to increase the marketability of

their properties and in turn add to the value for tenants too. With the buy to let market feeling the pressure as much as any other sector, the benefit of low cost appliances speaks for itself. Additionally, there are environmental benefits. As a global manufacturer, Indesit has historically been

faced with the challenge of managing unwanted and end of life machines. In the interest of addressing this, the concept of landfill was deemed both costly and environmental unsustainable. Much of what would at one time been deemed unsellable due to minor cosmetic damage is now reworked at the company’s Peterborough site; with the added benefit of retaining many jobs there. The store is open to the general public as well as trade so that everyone can benefit from the venture. Ian

continues, “There was a time when household appliances were luxury items but ask yourself if you could cope in modern society without a fridge, a washing machine, etc. Everyone is facing new economic challenges daily and we do not want “appliance poverty” to become the latest measure of this. People should not have to switch from the leading brands they know and trust such as Hotpoint and Indesit because of this”. Open 6 days a week, the Indesit Factory Graded Centre is an ambitious project that is proving to be an

innovative way of solving many of the challenges faced by the company, the industry and the public alike.
